removedonthemicroprocessorsocket.
Attention:Thepinsonthesocketarefragile.Anydamagetothepinsmayrequirereplacingthe
systemboard.
Ifyouareinstructedtoreturnthemicroprocessor,followallpackaginginstructions,anduseanypackaging
materialsforshippingthataresuppliedtoyou.
Replacingamicroprocessorandheatsink
Thefollowingnotesdescribethetypeofmicroprocessorthattheserversupportsandotherinformationthat
youmustconsiderwhenyouinstallamicroprocessorandheatsink.
•Microprocessorsaretobeinstalledonlybytrainedtechnicians.
Important:Alwaysusethemicroprocessorinstallationtooltoinstallamicroprocessor.Failingtouse
themicroprocessorinstallationtoolmaydamagethemicroprocessorsocketsonthesystemboard.Any
damagetothemicroprocessorsocketsmayrequirereplacingthesystemboard.
•Beextremelycareful,themicroprocessorsocketcontactsareveryfragile.Donottouchthe
microprocessorsocketcontacts.Contaminantsonthemicroprocessorcontactsormicroprocessorsocket
contacts,suchasoilfromyourskin,cancauseconnectionfailuresbetweenthecontactsandthesocket.
•Donotallowthethermalgreaseonthemicroprocessorandheatsinktocomeincontactwithanything.
Contactwithanysurfacecancontaminatethethermalgreaseandthemicroprocessorsocket.
•Donotuseanytoolsorsharpobjectstoliftthelockingleversonthemicroprocessorsocket.Doingso
mightresultinpermanentdamagetothesystemboard.
•Eachmicroprocessorsocketmustalwayscontaineitherasocketcoveroramicroprocessorandheatsink.
•Besuretouseonlytheinstallationtoolsprovidedwiththenewmicroprocessortoremoveorinstall
themicroprocessor.Donotuseanyothertool.
•Wheninstallingmultiplemicroprocessors,openonemicroprocessorsocketatatimetoavoiddamaging
othermicroprocessorsocketcontacts.
•Theserversupportsuptotwomulti-coremicroprocessors.Seehttp://www.lenovo.com/serverproven/

•Thefirstmicroprocessormustalwaysbeinstalledinmicroprocessorsocket1onthesystemboard.
•Whenonemicroprocessorisinstalled,theairbafflemustbeinstalledtoprovidepropersystemcooling.
•Donotremovethefirstmicroprocessorfromthesystemboardwhenyouinstallthesecond
microprocessor.
•Whenyouinstallthesecondmicroprocessor,youmustalsoinstalladditionalmemoryandthesixthand

fordetailsabouttheinstallationsequence.
•Donotmixmicroprocessorswithdifferentcoresinthesameserver.
•Toensureproperserveroperationwhenyouinstallanadditionalmicroprocessor,usemicroprocessors
thathavethesameQuickPathInterconnect(QPI)linkspeed,integratedmemorycontrollerfrequency,core
frequency,powersegment,internalcachesize,andtype.
•Mixingmicroprocessorsofdifferentsteppinglevelswithinthesameservermodelissupported.
•Whenmixingmicroprocessorswithdifferentsteppinglevelswithinthesameservermodel,youdonot
havetoinstallthemicroprocessorwithloweststeppinglevelandfeaturesinmicroprocessorsocket1.
•Bothmicroprocessorvoltageregulatormodulesareintegratedonthesystemboard.
