EN 303Fax error codes and messages
232, 233, 234, 235 ECM, 236 ECM, 237: Multiple causes:
• Possible poor line conditions. Older phone lines, static on the line, power brownouts, or other power-
related problems can cause communication failures. Call the telephone provider if line conditions fail to
improve. Disable Error Correction Mode (ECM) and select a slower reception speed if necessary.
• Stop key was pressed by the sender before the fax completed. Set your fax to receive at a slower
transmission speed.
• Call waiting service made a click sound that is heard for an incoming call, momentarily disconnecting the
fax call. Do not use call waiting on a line with a fax machine.
• Power at the sending machine location was interrupted or deliberately turned off. Ask to have the fax
resent.
238, 239 ECM, 240 ECM, 241 ECM: Sending fax machine sent an unexpected communication, which is usually
a defect in the sending machine. Have the resend the fax. Disable Error Correction Mode (ECM), and then
request that the fax be sent from a different machine if the issue persists.
243, 244: Stop key was pressed by the sender before the fax completed, or the polling feature is not
compatible with the receiving fax machine. Contact the sender to see if they are cancelling the transmission.
If not, set your fax to receive at a slower transmission speed, check polling specifications and reconfigure as
needed, or enable or disable Error Correction Mode (ECM).
245 ECM, 246 ECM: Multiple causes:
• Stop key was pressed by the sender before the fax completed. Contact the sender to see if they are
cancelling the transmission. If not, set your fax to receive at a slower transmission speed and disable
Error Correction Mode (ECM).
• Call waiting service made a click sound that is heard for an incoming call, momentarily disconnecting the
fax call. Do not use call waiting on a line with a fax machine.
• Large or complex document was held due to lack of available memory. The hold time exceeded the
timeout (typically 60 seconds) and the fax terminated. Have the item sent as two smaller documents and,
if necessary, at a lower resolution.
247, 248, 249 ECM, 250 ECM, 251 ECM: Sending fax machine has stopped responding. Ask the sender to reset
their machine. Turn both sending and receiving machines off for 10 seconds and then turn them on again to
clear some error conditions. Set your fax to receive at a slower transmission speed, if necessary.
252: Check for poor line conditions. Call the telephone provider if line conditions fail to improve. Disable Error
Correction Mode (ECM) and select a slower reception speed if necessary. If you received several pages of a
larger document successfully, ask the sender to fax the document in several smaller parts.
253: Sending fax machine is using a page width that is not supported by the local machine. Have the sender use
a standard (letter or A4) page width.
281, 282 ECM, 283, 284, 285 ECM, 286, 290: Telephone connection failed or there was a communication error
with the sending fax machine. Check for poor line conditions, and have the fax resent when conditions improve.
If necessary, set your fax to receive at a slower transmission speed, and disable Error Correction Mode (ECM).
291, 292: The received fax could not be stored. Turn your fax machine off for 10 seconds, turn it back on
again, and then have the fax resent at a lower resolution. If the issue persists when receiving from multiple fax
machines, the issue is likely hardware related and the machine should be serviced or replaced.
