Chapter 4 Fault diagnosis
104 SMSO-2-02.04- 15.07.03
Coffee too cold/ too hot / Water temperature too low or too high
Wide variations can be detected by looking at the
colour of the foam:
white foam = too cold
dark brown foam = too hot
System / component Possible cause Remedy
Programming Instant heater temperature is wrongly
programmed
Adjust brewing temperature setting (op-
timum temperature: approx 86 – max.
90
o
C at outlet)
Over-temperature 1 and / or over-
temperature 2 are incorrectly pro-
grammed.
Check both temperatures and adjust the
setting
over-temperature 1: 16°C
over-temperature 2: 7°C
Control system Control system (Flash ROM) defective replace
Heating relay defective (contacts
bonded together, no longer switch off
heating; instant heater gets too hot)
replace
Heating relay defective (no longer
switches on; instant heater stays cold)
replace
Wiring defects (see control system dia-
gram, instant heater heating)
Replace components or strands / plug
contacts
Safety thermostat(s) triggered as a re-
sult of over-temperature in the instant
heater
Find out the cause of the over-heating;
reset the safety thermostat, or if there
are visible traces of the effects of heat,
replace.
Instant heater Temperature sensor defective (layer of
calcium! Or incorrect resistance
value???)
replace
Heating defective / calcified replace
Flush system Incorrect setting or setting not made
(programmed) at all; the brewing system
is not pre-heated.
Check the flash programming and
change any settings.
Booster does not heat up Faulty heater Replace the booster as a complete unit
Over-temperature fuse has triggered Clarify the reason for the overheating,
only then replace the booster as a com-
plete unit.
Booster malfunction
(Brew pipe discharge is insufficient)
System / Components Possible cause Remedy
Brew pipe disposal does not work
after brewing.
End of pipe on relief pipe is submerged
into the water level of the siphon.
Clogged (coffee grease)
Relief pipe is too short / falling distance
too little
Guide the pipe into the siphon so that
the pipe end is free.
Replace
Lay the relief pipe in such a way that the
hose flow is as far as possible under the
machine.
