CAN bus connection
The requirements for connecting the Evaluation Unit in accordance with the distance from
the SR unit are described in the Project Planning instructions.
Standard cabling The Evaluation Unit is usually installed in the vicinity of the measuring point so that it can be
easily connected using the 4 m CAN bus cable supplied. An additional 15 m CAN bus
extension cable, preassembled with connectors, is available from SICK MAIHAK as an
accessory.
Mounting the
Evaluation Unit at
a remote location
A 6-pin terminal box is available for installing the Evaluation Unit at a greater distance from
the SR unit. This is connected to the SR unit using the 4 m CAN bus cable supplied with the
measuring system. The Evaluation Unit is connected using a 6-pin shielded twisted pair
cable (to be provided by the customer) that is suitable for CAN bus applications. The entire
length of the CAN bus connections, including the optional O
2
Analyzer GM 302, must not
exceed 1000 m. For maintenance purposes, it must be possible to remove the
Evaluation Unit temporarily and connect it directly at the measuring point with the SR unit.
Laying the cables
General notes
– Ensure that the cable at the connection points are sufficiently long.
– If possible, do not lay power supply cables in the direct vicinity of signal cables.
– Protect open ends on preinstalled cables against the effects of weather until the devices
are installed.
Procedure
‡ Install separate power supply cables with circuit-breakers for:
– GM35 SR unit (via connection unit or terminal strip in the control cabinet)
– Purge-air unit, if used; also install motor circuit-breakers and (optional) phase-failure
switches.
– Evaluation unit
ATTENTION
Take precautions to prevent the purge-air supply from being switched off inadvertently
Provide disconnectors for the purge-air unit with clearly visible warnings to prevent the unit
from being switched off inadvertently.
‡ Provide easily accessible cable ducts or empty tubes for preassembled cables supplied
with the system (shown with plugs at one or both ends in Fig. 10). Approx. 2 m of
loose cable should be available at the measuring points to facilitate subsequent mainte-
nance work on the measuring system after it has been removed from the duct.
‡ Lay all customer supplied cables (shown without plugs) as shown in Fig. 10
– The specifications for the wire cross-sections are recommendations. The cables for
analog and binary signals may differ slightly from these (but not the CAN bus
connections or power supply cables)
– Start with the internal connections between the GM35 system components
– Status and signal cables from the GM35 Evaluation unit to terminal strips on the
customer's status/signaling equipment can be added later if necessary
