Determining device names
With the UNIX command autoconf -l or via the program SYSADM-> Configuration
Hardware (alphanumeric terminal) or XConfig (graphical terminal) you can see which
devices are installed:
Ê Enter the following command:
The names for the peripheral devices are output as they are given in the overview
above. In the autoconf output, these names are preceded by a part of the symbolic
device name, e.g. ios0/stape006 MC12.
If you look under MC12 in the overview, you will see that this is the name for the
quarter-inch cartridge tape drive. You must also look for the Channel-ID and the
drive address in the autoconf output (in the example above: Channel-ID = 00, Drive
address = 6). You must replace the character string XXY with this numeric string
(here: 006) in the special file names when issuing write/read commands.
Example:
You want to save a file with the name “file” in tar format on your quarter-inch cartridge
tape drive:
$ /sbin/autoconf -l | pg
$ tar cvf /dev/ios0/rstape006 file
