On snowmobiles allowing two passengers, if you have an adult and
a c hild for pas senger, BRP reco mmends that the child si ts in the
center location. This allows an adult sitting in the rear seat to keep
a visual con tact w ith the ch ild and h old him if n ece ssary. In addition,
the child is best protected against the wind and cold temperature if
seated in the center lo cation.
Each operator has a responsibility to ensure the safety of his passen-
gers and should inform them of snowm obiling basics.
WARNING

Never allow anyone to sit between the handlebar and the
ope rato r.
Each p ass eng er seat mu st have a strap or grab h andles and
meet S SCC s tandard s.
Passengers and operators must always wear DOT ap-
prov ed he lmets and w arm clothing appro pria te fo r snow-
mobiling. Make sure that no skin is exposed.
Once underway, i f a pas s enger fee ls unc omfortable or i n-
secu re for any rea s on, he mus t no t wait, a nd tell the driv er
to slowdown or stop.
Riding with passengers on board is differ ent than riding alone. The
operator has the benefit of knowing what will be the next maneuver
and is able to prepare himself accordingly. The operator als o bene-
fits from the support of his grip o n th e handl ebar. In co ntras t, the
passe ngers have to rely on the operator’s careful and safe operation
of the vehicle. In addition, “body english is limited with passen-
gers, and the opera tor c an sometimes see mo re o f the trail ahe ad
than the passengers. Therefor e, smooth starting and stopping are
required with passengers, and the operator m ust slow down. The
operato r must also warn passengers of side hills, bum ps, branches,
et c. An unforeseen bump can leave you passenger-less. Remind
your passengers to lean into the turn with you, without causing the
vehicle to topple. Be extremely car eful, go more slowly and check
th e pa sseng ers frequently.

When riding with a passenger:
