Railroad Crossing
Never ride on railroad tracks. It is illegal. Railroad tracks and railroad
rights-o f-way are pri va te prop erty. A snowmo bil e is no match for a
train. W hen crossin g a ra ilroad track , s top, look a nd listen.
Night Rides
The am ount o f natural and artificial light at a g iven tim e can effect
your ability to see or to be seen. Nighttime snowmobiling is delight-
ful. It can be a unique experience if you ack nowledge your reduced
visibility. Before you start, m ake certain your lights are cle an and
work properly. Drive at speeds that will allow you to stop in time
when you see an unknown or dangerous object ahead. Stay on es-
tablished trails and n ever operate in un familiar territory. Avo id rivers
and lakes. Gu y wires, barbed wire fences, cab le d road en trances and
ot her ob jects such as tree l imbs are di ffic ult to s ee a t nig ht. Never
drive alone. Always carry a flashlight. Keep away from residential
areas and respect the right of others to sleep.
Safari Riding
Before starting out, designate a “trail boss” to lead the party and
anot her person to follow-up at t he end of the party. Ensure that all
members of the part y ar e aware of the proposed route and desti-
nation. M ake certai n that you are carry in g all neces sary to ols and
equipment and that you have su fficient fuel t o complete the trip.
Nev er ove rtake the tra il bo ss or, for that matter, any other s nowmo-
bile. Use down-the-line hand signals to indicate hazar ds or intent of
direction change. Assist others whenever necessary.
It is always IMPORTANT to kee p a safe distance b etween e ach
snowmobile. A lways main tain a safe interval and allow sufficient
stopping di st ance. Don't be a tailgater. Know the position of the
machine ahead.
Signa ls
If you int end to st op, r aise either hand straight above your head. A
left turn is indicated by extending your left hand st raight out in the
proper direction. For right turns, extend the left arm and rai se the
hand to a vertical position so it forms a right angle at the elbow. Every
snowmobiler should relay any signal to the ones behind.

Whenever possible, pull off the trail when you stop. This will reduce
th e haza rd to oth er s nowmob ilers us in g the trail.
