MAINTENANCE MANUAL STEMME S12
7.1.3.2 VERTICAL TAIL
RUDDER ATTACHMENT AND FREE MOVEMENT
• Check condition of rudder ttings (stainless steel), specially check lower tting for cracks
and deformation.
• Check tight t of screw connections and rivet connection of bearings, friction in bearings
(observe section 6.5 Lubrication) and backlash. The axial backlash of the rudder should
be minimal (washer D125-08 must be installed between lower bearing and lower hinge bolt).
• Check condition of split pin. Move rudder to left and right stops to check for unobstructed
movement. Especially the tail wheel coupling must not obstruct rudder deections if the
tail wheel steering is blocked.
ANTENNA
• Check condition of plug contact and heat-shrink tubing.
• Check xing at lower rudder tting (cable support).
•
Check free movement of rudder without the coaxial cable obstructing rudder control cables
and coupling rods to tail wheel.
WATER BALLAST TANK OPTIONAL
• Check condition of drainage, ventilation and lling holes of the water ballast tank in the
right shell of the vertical tail for cleanliness, clean if necessary.
• Check the surrounding structure for abnormal surface (local buckling, roughness, holes
and delamination) and cracks/deformation.
• Check the empennage structure in the area of the tail wheel for residue of water. Findings
could indicate leaking of the water ballast tank. In this case check the interior space of the
vertical tail with camera or equivalent technique.
