MAINTENANCE MANUAL STEMME S12
3.7.13 ENGINE IGNITION SYSTEM ATA 740000
3.7.13.1 DESCRIPTION
The ROTAX 914 engine is equipped with a dual ignition. The ignition system works independently
from the aircraft’s electrical system and energy sources. The ignition system is part of the engine.
A detailed description can be found in the ROTAX 914 Maintenance Manual.
The ignition system is controlled by the combined ignition-starter-key-switch located on the
instrument panel. It includes the magneto check function. The ignition switch is connected with
two shielded AWG22 wires to the electronic ignition control boxes, one for each box.
When the switch is closed, the related control box is grounded and deactivated. An ignition
retarding module is connected in parallel to the ignition control boxes. It is actuated by the key
switch. When in “Start” position, the ignition retarder deactivates the ignition control boxes for
approximately 3 seconds. This allows the foldable propeller to unfold the blades completely before
the engine res. After the delay time the ignition is activated automatically.
The ignition system is not fused. The fuse of the ignition retarding module is located at the
instrument panel fuse holder (engine bus).

3.7.13.3 OPERATION
• In “OFF” position the control inputs of both ignition boxes are connected to ground and
the ignition is deactivated.
• In “LEFT” position the control input of the right side ignition box is connected to ground
and the right ignition channel is deactivated.
• In “RIGHT” position the control input of the left side ignition box is connected to ground
and the left ignition channel is deactivated.
• In “BOTH” position the control inputs of both ignition boxes are open and both ignitions
are deactivated.
• In “START” position the control inputs of both ignition boxes are momentarily connected
to ground and the ignition is inhibited for approximately 3 seconds.
The engine starting procedure and operation of the ignition-starter-key-switch is described in
the S12 Aircraft Flight Manual.
