Note:Thesteeringboxsectorgearandcastorforkshafthavetaperedshafts
thatmustbeloosenedbeforesteeringboxcanbeseparatedfromcastorfork.
8.Separatethegearboxfromthefrontforkshaftusingoneofthefollowing
procedures:
A.Removeanddiscardthecotterpinfromthecastorforkshaft.Carefully
loosentheslottedhexnuttopushthegearboxfromthefrontforkshaft
thenliftthegearboxfromthemachine.
B.Removethefastenerssecuringthegearboxplatetothegearboxcover;
refertoServicingtheSteeringGearBox(Model08743)(page7–16).Lift
thegearboxcoverassemblyfromthemachine.Useasuitablepullerto
removethesectorgearfromthefrontforkshaftthenremovethegear
boxplatefromthemachine.
9.Locateandretrievethewoodruffkey.
10.Iftheslottedhexnutsecuringthefrontforkwasloosenedwhileremoving
thesteeringgearbox,tightentheslottedhexnutfrom24to29N·m(18to
22ft-lb).Makesurethattheforkdoesnothaveanyendplayanditrotates
withoutbinding.Securetheslottedhexnutwithanewcotterpin.
InstallingtheSteeringGearBox
1.Thoroughlycleanthetaperedsurfacesofthefrontforkshaftandthesteering
gearboxsectorgearbore.
2.Placethewoodruffkeyintheslotofthefrontforkshaft.
3.Alignthekeywayinthegearboxsectorgearwiththekeyandslidethegear
boxontothefrontforkshaft.
4.Securesteeringgearboxtothefrontforkwiththeangenut.Tightenthe
angenutfrom68to81N·m(50to60ft-lb).Fitthecaptothetopofthe
gearbox.
5.Applyanti-seizelubricanttothesteeringgearboxpinionshaft.
6.Positionthefrontwheelstraightahead.
7.Slidethesteeringshaftassemblyontothegearboxpinionshaft.
8.Securethesteeringshafttothesteeringgearboxpinionshaftwiththe
previouslyremovedfasteners.
9.Tightenthesteeringshaftbearingsetscrewfrom5to7N·m(45to65in-lb).
10.Ifpreviouslyremoved,installthesteeringwheel;refertoRemovingand
InstallingtheSteeringWheel(page7–13).
11.Installthefueltank;refertoRemovingandInstallingtheFuelT ank(page
4–12).
