1.Parkmachineonalevelsurface,lowercuttingdecks,stopengineand
removekeyfromthekeyswitch.
2.Turnbattery−disconnectswitchtotheOFFposition.
3.Locatepistonpumpsolenoidcoiltobetestedanddisconnectwireharness
connectorfromsolenoidcoil(Figure268).
Note:Priortotakingsmallresistancereadingswithadigitalmultimeter,short
themetertestleadstogether.Themeterwilldisplayasmallresistancevalue
(usually0.5ohmsorless).Thisresistanceisduetotheinternalresistance
ofthemeterandtestleads.Subtractthisvaluefromthemeasuredvalue
ofthecomponentyouaretesting.
4.Usingamultimeter(ohmssetting),measureresistancebetweenthetwo(2)
connectorterminalsonthesolenoidcoil.Solenoidcoilresistanceshouldbe
3.66ohms.
Note:Solenoidcoilresistanceshouldbemeasuredwithsolenoidat
approximately20ºC(68ºF).Resistancemaybeslightlydifferentthanlisted
atdifferenttemperatures.Typically,afailedsolenoidcoilwilleitherbeshorted
(verylowornoresistance)oropen(inniteresistance).
5.Ifsolenoidcoilresistanceisincorrect,replacecoilasfollows:
A.Usea12point,26mmsockettoloosenandremovethecoilnutthat
securessolenoidcoil.
B.SlidesolenoidcoilandO−ringsfromvalvestem.DiscardtheO−ringsand
cleanallcorrosionordirtfromthevalve.
C.LubricatenewO−ringswithpetroleumjellyandslidenewcoilwith
O−ringsontothesolenoidstem.
D.Usea12point,26mmsockettoinstallandtightencoilnutfrom5N·m
(44in−lb).Donotover−tightencoilnut.
6.Ifsolenoidcoilresistanceiscorrectandacircuitproblemstillexists,check
thewireharness(seeAppendixA(pageA–1)).
7.Aftertestingiscompleted,connectwireharnessconnectortothesolenoid
coil.
8.Turnthebattery−disconnectswitchtotheONpositionbeforereturningthe
machinetoservice.
