Secondary Door
[Option – Secondary door]
The secondary door is installed at the aft edge of the monument immediately aft
of the flight deck door creating a secure vestibule area between the two doors.
Although intrusion resistant, the secondary door is not intended, nor is it certified,
to meet the requirements for protection of the flight deck.
The secondary door opens in both directions and can be fixed open in either
position. The door should be secured open in the vestibule during taxi, takeoff, and
landing, in accordance with door placarding. Typically the door is closed by the
cabin crew whenever the flight deck door must be opened. The door has a
see-through bar design to allow continuous monitoring and observation of the
flight deck door by the flight attendants and in-flight security personnel.
When closed, the door is latched when electrical power is available and unlatched
when electrical power is removed. A door access system allows opening from the
cabin side using the pull-handle. This handle has no key and is not physically part
of the latch mechanism, but does require use of the latch access system. From the
flight deck side the door can be manually opened at anytime by turning the door
handle and either pushing or pulling the door open.
Door Latch Access System
The secondary door incorporates a programmable time delay latch which is used
to delay access to the vestibule area from the cabin side. The access system
consists of an access switch and two red indicator lights.
To open the door from the cabin side first push the access switch located on the
door frame next to the door handle. After a fixed time delay programmed by the
operator, entry into the vestibule area is accomplished by either pushing or pulling
the door open. The latch mechanism is unpowered for 5 seconds after the time
delay expires, and then returns to the latched position. After the 5 seconds have
expired, the door is again latched when closed.
[Option – Video surveillance]
There are two red indicator lights positioned at the top of the door frame, one on
the cabin side and one on the flight deck side. The lights illuminate to indicate the
door is latched. The lights blink when the time delay has been activated, and the
lights are off for 5 seconds while the door is unlatched. The light positioned inside
the vestibule is visible from the flight deck using the viewing port or the security
camera.
Mechanical Override
Removable clevis pins on the flight deck side at the floor footings allow the door
to be removed in case of a latch jam.
