SECTION 58 -- ATTACHMENTS AND HEADERS -- CHAPTER 1
58-9
During assembly of the bevel gearbox, it is important
to be aware that all bearings, except for the front input
shaft bearing, 1, are “low tolerance” bearings to pro-
vide a specific stack height. These low tolerance
bearings, in conjunction with the use of precision
forged gears and precision machining of the gearbox
housing, have eliminated the need for backlash ad-
justments during repair of the gearbox. The backlash
in the assembled gearbox should be between 0.005″
and 0.011″; hold the input shaft steady with one
hand, and carefully rotate the output bevel shaft back
and forth with the other hand. You should hear and
feel a small amount of movement between the two
gears.
If no backlash is detected after gearbox repair with
new parts, recheck the gearbox for correct assembly
of all components.
NOTE: The low tolerance bearings are carefully ma-
chined for a specific “stack height.” Do not mix old
and new bearing components or substitute with “job-
ber” bearings.
1. Pack the input shaft bearing cones and the lower
output shaft bearing cone with grease prior to
installation, to ensure adequate lubrication at
start-up.
NOTE: Ensure the lower output shaft bearing, 1, Fig-
ure 17, is thoroughly packed with grease, or bearing
failure may occur.
