c) Ensuretheloadcellandsnubline(s)areproperlyconfiguredformakingupconnections.A“snubline”isalengthofwirerope
thatconnectstherearofthetongbodytoasturdyanchoronthedrillfloor(seeSection2.F.1).Thesnublinepreventsthetong
bodyfromspinningintheoppositedirectionofthecageplatewhentorquebeginstobuildinthejoint.FarrCanadaCorp.rec-
ommendsusingtwosnublineswhenrunningtheequipmenttoeliminateuncontrolledmovementineitherrotationaldirection.
Thesnubline(s)mustberatedfortheappliedtorquepluswhateversafetymarginsstatedbyyourownoperatingpolicies.The
snublineconnectionpointonthedrillfloormustbesturdyenoughtoabsorballappliedforceswhenmakingupthejoints.When
makingupjointstheloadcellmustbeconnectedtothedriller’ssideofthetong,whichistheleftsideofthetongasseenfrom
therear.Foraccuratetorquemeasurementthesnublinebetweenthetongbodyandtheanchormustbeperpendiculartothe
vertical,andperpendiculartothecentre-lineofthetong.
d) Actuatetheliftcylindercontrolvalvetolifttheassemblyfromthedrillfloor.Pullingthevalvetowardtheoperatorwillretractthe
liftcylindertoraisetheassembly(seeIllustration2.H.3below).Notethatrigpersonnelarerequiredtostabilizethetongand
backupasitisbeingliftedsoitdoesnotswingandcollidewithotherrigequipment.
