MainTenance
McCoyCompletions&Drillingrecognizesthatminoron-siterepairsandmodicationsarerequiredtomaintainpeakoperatingconditionofyour
equipment,ortomatchyourequipmentwiththeoperatingenvironment.Examplesofminorrepairsare
● replacementofdamagedhydraulichosesandttings.
● replacementofmalfunctioningpressuregaugesandvalves.
● replacementofdoorspringstopcylinders
● replacementoffasteners
AnyreplacedcomponentmustbeanidenticalcomponentsuppliedbyMcCoyCompletions&Drilling.ReplacedfastenersmustbeGrade8or
equivalent,orwhateverfastenerisspeciedbyMcCoy.
A. GENERAL MAINTENANCE SAFETY PRACTICES
Thepracticesidentifiedhereareintendedasaguideline.Allpersonnelareresponsibleforperformingtheirtasksinamannerthatensures
worker,equipment,andenvironmentalsafety,andmayrequiretakingadditionalstepsthatarenotidentifiedinthissection.
Equipmentmaintenanceshallbeperformedonlybydesignatedqualifiedmaintenancepersonnel.Wearallpersonalprotectiveequipment
(PPE)specified by your company’s HSE policy, and followallof your company’ssafety guidelines. Do not begina maintenance task
withoutthepropertoolsormaterialsonhand,ortheproperdrawingsanddocumentationnecessary.
Scheduleplannedmaintenancewithoperatorstoavoidconflicts,unnecessarydowntime,andthedangerofaccidentalequipmentactiva-
tion.Notifyoperationswhenmaintenanceproceduresarecompleteandequipmentfunctionalityisrestoredandtested.
Ifon-sitemaintenancemustbeperformed(inotherwords,ifequipmentcannotbetransportedtoacontrolledmaintenancefacility)isolate
thelocationofthemaintenancetopreventunawarepersonnelfrominadvertentlyexposingthemselvestoahazard.Usetape,rope,or
signagetoclearlyindicate“off-limits”area.
Replacementoflarge,heavyindividualpartsand/orheavystructuralcomponentsmustbeperformedusinganapprovedliftingdeviceof
sufficientliftingcapacity.Usecarewhenattachingtheliftingdevice,andsafeguardareatoavoidendangeringpersonnelorequipment.
AllsparepartsmustmeetorexceedOEMspecificationsinordertomaintainequipmentintegrity,especiallyprotectiveequipment.
DO NOT PERFORM MAINTENANCE UNTIL TUBULAR CONNECTION EQUIPMENT HAS BEEN COM-
PLETELY ISOLATED FROM HYDRAULIC POWER
Yourequipmentusesmaterialsthatmaybeharmfultotheenvironmentifimproperlydisposedof(hydraulicfluid,grease,etc.).Dispose
ofallmaterialsaccordingtoyourcompany’sproscribedenvironmentalprotectionregulations.
B. CLEANING
Clean tong thoroughlycleaned with a good petroleum-based cleaning agent after each job, prior to storage.Farr® recommends that
themotorandvalveassemblybeperiodicallyremoved,alongwiththetoptongplate,sothatguides,rollersandgearscanbeproperly
cleaned(seeSection3.H,Overhaul).Ensurethatcleaningsolventsandchemicalsarecapturedtopreventenvironmentalcontamination,
anddisposeofallmaterialsaccordingtoyourcompany’sproscribedenvironmentalprotectionregulations.
C. PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE PRACTICES
Regularmaintenanceprogramsarenecessary,andmustbeestablishedtoassuresafe,dependableoperationofyourHydraulicTubular
ConnectionSystemandtoavoidcostlybreakdownmaintenance.Thefollowingmaintenanceproceduresprovidesinformationrequiredto
properlymaintainyourequipment.Yourequipmentmayrequiremore,orlessmaintenancedependinguponthefrequencyofuseandthe
fieldconditionsunderwhichyourequipmentoperates.Thesemaintenanceproceduresaredesignedforequipmentoperatingat10°Cto
35°Cambienttemperaturefor10hoursperday.McCoyrecommendsthattheinspectionandmaintenanceproceduresinthissectionbe
performedasrecommendedinthemaintenancechecklists(seeAppendices),orinconjunctionwithyourmaintenanceforeman’sexperi-
enceandbestestimateofwhenyourequipmentisdueforthismaintenance.
Manufacturersofpurchasedcomponentsincludedwithyourhydraulictubularconnectionequipment(forexample:motors,valves,etc.)
mayspecifymaintenancetasksandintervalsoverandabovewhatMcCoyrecommendsaspartoftheirrecommendedprocedures.Users
ofthisequipmentmaychoosetoperformorignoretheseadditionaltasksattheirdiscretion.
Filtrationofthehydraulicfluidmustbe10micronsorbetter.Prematurefoulingofparticulatefilterswithinyourprimemoverorancillary
hydraulicpowerunit requiresimmediatehydraulicfluidlaboratory analysistopreventpremature wearofhydraulicsystemdue tohigh
levelsofwearmetalsinthefluid.
McCoy Drilling & Completions recommends tracking all maintenance activity including the lubrication schedule and replacement of
hydraulichoses.Thismaybeasimpleaskeepingapaperlog,orusingasoftware-basedmaintenancetrackingutility.Amaintenancelog
isavaluabletoolthatcanbeusedforeasilyretrievingmaintenancehistoryoridentifyingtrendsthatrequirecorrection.
