J. MONTHLY MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST - POWER TONG
Thefollowingmaintenancechecklistisintendedasaguidelineratherthanadefinitivemaintenanceschedule.Yourequipmentmayrequire
more,orless,maintenancedependinguponthefrequencyofuse,thepercentageofmaximumtorquethatyourequipmentisroutinely
subjectedto,andthefieldconditionsunderwhichyourequipmentoperates.Farrrecommendsthatthefollowinginspectionandmainte-
nanceproceduresbeperformedmonthly,orinconjunctionwithyourmaintenanceforeman’sexperienceandbestestimateofwhenyour
equipmentisdueforthismaintenance.
1.
Rotatecageplate/rotarygearuntiltheopeningintherotarygearfacestowardstherearofthetong.

Cleantheexteriorofthetoolthoroughly,usingeitherwater(ifusingapressurewasherensurealow-pressurewashwandis
used),oranappropriatesolvent-basedgrease-cuttingcleanersuchasVarsol.Ensureadequatecontainmentisinplaceto
preventenvironmentalcontaminationfromresidualhydraulicfluid,dirtygrease,andcleaningagents.
4.
Removetheaccesspanelonthesideofthetongdirectlyadjacenttotheshiftermechanism.
5.
Cleantheinteriorofthetongthoroughly,usingeitherwater(donotuseapressurewasher),oranappropriatesolvent-based
grease-cuttingcleanersuchasVarsol.Ensureadequatecontainmentisinplacetopreventenvironmentalcontaminationfrom
residualhydraulicfluid,dirtygrease,andcleaningagents.Makeanoteifanymetalshavingsormetalpiecesareflushedoutof
thegeartraincavity-ifshavingsormetalpiecesareseenthetongmustbeoverhauledbeforeitisreturnedtoservice.

Inspectallfastenersandfastenersafetywires(ifequipped).Replaceanymissingfasteners-useGrade8boltsonlyunless
otherwisespecified.Re-torqueallexternalfastenerstoSAEspecifications.
7.
Repairorreplaceanydamagedormissingexternalbodyparts,suchastorquegaugemounts,hydraulicsupports,safetydoor
protectors,etc.
8.
Performavisualinspectionofallfastenersandprotrudingbodypieces(example:hydraulicvalvemounts,inlet&outletline
supports,tonglegs,shifterhandlepivotlugs).Tightenorreplacelooseormissingfasteners.
9.
Inspecttongforsignsofprematurewear,ormovingpartsthatarerubbing(baremetalwherethereusedtobepaintisagood
indicationofwear.
10.
Inspectallpaint-locationsinwhichthepainthasbeendamagedmustberepairedpriortothetongbeingreturnedtoservice.
Prepareareastobepaintedtoensuretheyarefreeofgrease,dirt,orsolvent.Touchupusingasolvent-basedacrylicpaint
-“McCoyGrey”ispaintcolornumberRAL7015,“McCoyYellow”(hazardareas)isRAL1007,andMcCoyGreenisRAL6029
(contactFarrsalesforpaintnumberforcustompaintapplications).Allowsufficienttimeforpainttodrybeforeproceeding.
11.
Visuallyinspectallload-bearingwelds.Anyweldthatiscrackedorseparatingmustberepairedandrepaintedbeforereturning
thetongtoservice.
DO NOT PERFORM ANY FURTHER ACTIONS OR MAINTENANCE WHILE THE TONG IS CONNECT-
ED TO ANY HYDRAULIC POWER SUPPLY. FARR RECOMMENDS THAT ALL HYDRAULIC LINES
ARE FULLY DISCONNECTED, AND RESIDUAL HYDRAULIC PRESSURE IS BLED OFF. ENSURE
ADEQUATE CONTAINMENT IS IN PLACE TO PREVENT ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINATION FROM
RESIDUAL HYDRAULIC FLUID.

DePressurIze HyDraulIC system In PreParatIon for maIntenanCe:
1) De-energizethepowerunit.
2) RepeatedlyactuatethetongmotorcontrolvalveleverINBOTHDIRECTIONStodissipateanyresidualpressureinthe
valveandmotor.
3) RemovethehydraulicSUPPLYlinefromtheequipment.
4) RepeatedlyactuatetheremainingcontrolvalveleversINBOTHDIRECTIONStodissipateanyresidualpressureinthe
remainderofthehydrauliccontrolsystem.
5) DisconnectthehydraulicRETURNlinefromtheequipment.
6) Disconnectremaininghosessuchascasedrains,orlinesconnectedtotheturnscounter.
HYDRAULIC PRESSURES AS HIGH AS OPERATING PRESSURE MAY REMAIN TRAPPED IN SMALL
AREAS OF THE EQUIPMENT. ENSURE ALL MAINTENANCE IS CARRIED OUT BY A QUALIFIED
SERVICE TECHNICIAN, AND THAT ADEQUATE PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT IS USED TO
GUARD AGAINST PRESSURE INJURIES
