F. RECOMMENDED PERIODIC CHECKS
1. Door Stop Spring
Thespringinsidetheactuatorcylindermustbeofsufficientstrengthtoenablethedoorlatchmechanismtosnapclosedproperly.
Doorstopspringfatiguewillresultinsluggishlatchoperation.Replacethelatchspringinsidethecylinderwhenthisoccurs.
2. Shifting Shaft
Theshiftingyokeissecuredtotheshiftingshaftbyonehexjamnutandonelocknutonthebottomoftheyoke.Checkthesenuts
aftereachjob.Dothisbyremovingtheclutchinspectionplateandensuringasnugfitpriortolubrication.
3. Backing Pin
Performavisualinspectionofthebackingpinaftereachjob.Replacethepinifstresscracksorexcessivewearisfound,orifthe
pinappearsbent.
4. Torque Gauge Assembly
Periodiccalibrationofthetorquegaugeisrecommendedtoassureaccuratetorquereadings.Whenhavingthetorquegaugeser-
vicedandcalibrated,itiscriticaltonotethearmlengthofthetong,asindicatedonpage1.3.
G. OVERHAUL PROCEDURES - DISASSEMBLY
Oncethetonghasbeenremoved from the backup itmaybeoverhauledusingthedisassemblyinstructionsspecified in the following
procedure.Accesstothegeartrainispossiblebyremovalofthetopplateofthetong.
ALL MAINTENANCE AND OVERHAUL SHOULD BE PERFORMED FROM THE TOP. THE BOTTOM
PLATE OF THE TONG IS TYPICALLY WELDED TO THE SIDE BODY AND CANNOT BE REMOVED.
REPLACEMENT FASTENERS (BOLTS, NUTS, CAP SCREWS, MACHINE SCREWS, ETC.) USED
DURING MAINTENANCE OR OVERHAUL MUST BE GRADE 8 OR EQUIVALENT.
FASTENERS USED FOR MAINTENANCE OR OVERHAUL OF LOAD-BEARING COMPONENTS
(CHAIN SLINGS, RIGID SLINGS, LEGS) MUST BE TIGHTENED TO THE PROPER TORQUE
SEPARATION OF TONG FROM BACKUP
1. Suspendtongassemblywithcrane.Constructasupportstructurethatwillsupporttheweightofthebackup.Lowerthetongontothe
constructedsupport.
2. Supporttherigidslingwithacrane.Removetherigidslingassemblybydisconnectingthelevelingdevicesfromthehangerbrackets,
andusethecranetolifttheslingawayfromthetong.Storeinaprotectedarea.
3. Removethetworigidslinghangerbrackets.
4. Disconnectthethreehydraulicconnectionsfromthemotor.Undotherestraintssecuringtheinletandoutletlinesconnectionstotheir
supports,andliftthehydraulicvalvesectionawayfromthetong.Removetheinletandoutletsupportpieces.
5. Removetopbrakebandassembly(leaveadjustmentlugweldmentsinplacefornow).
6. Removethetongdoorstopcylinder.
7. Removedoorassemblybyremovingthedoorrollershaft.Supportdoorassemblyastherollershaftisremoved.Removethenutfrom
thetopoftherollershaft,anduseasoftalloymaterial(e.g.brassrod,etc.)tolightlytaptheshaftdownthroughthesupportroller
assemblyuntilitcomesfreeatthebottom.Usecautionthatthethreadsontheendsofthesupportrollershaftsarenotdamaged.Do
notlosethedoorshoulderbushings.
8. Removethehitchpinsecuringthetorquegaugeholdertothetorquegaugemountweldment,andremovethemount.
9. Removethefourhexsocketheadcapscrewssecuringthemotorandthetorquegaugemountweldment.Removethetorquegauge
mountweldment,thenliftthemotorupandawayfromthemotormount.Inspectthemotorgear,locatedatthebottomofthemotor
shaft,forgearclashingortoothdamage.Also,ensurethatthemotorgearissecurelyattachedtothemotorshaft.
10. Removethecotterpinandclevispinconnectingtheshifterhandletotheshiftershaft(itisnotnecessarytodisconnectthehandle
fromthepivotlugweldment).
11. Unboltthepivotlugweldmentfromthetopplate,andremovethepivotlugandhandleassembly.
12. Removethefourhexsocketheadcapscrewssecuringthemotormounttothetopplate.Usecarenottodislodgeandlosethetwo
positioningdowels.
13. Removethesnapringsecuringthedrivegeartothetopoftheclutchshaft.Carefullyremovethedrivegearfromtheclutchshaft.
