K. TUBULAR CONNECTION EQUIPMENT DE-COMMISSIONING & SHIPPING PROCEDURE
Performthefollowingdecommissioningprocedureswhenremovingtubularconnectionequipmentfromservice,withtheintentofshortto
long-termstorage.Theseproceduresareessentialforensuringproperprotectionoftheequipmentfromenvironmentalattack,andtoaid
inthequickturnaroundwhenreturningtheequipmenttoservice.
Store all o-rings, seals, packings, gaskets, etc. in strong moisture proof, airtight containers. Ensure that these items are not crushed,
nicked,orotherwisedamaged.
Donotperformanyfurtheractionsormaintenancewhilethetongisconnectedtoanyhydraulicpowersupply.Farrrecommendsthatall
hydrauliclinesare fully disconnected, and residual hydraulic pressure is bledoff.Ensureadequatecontainmentis in place to prevent
environmentalcontaminationfromresidualhydraulicfluid.

Performaninitialwashofthetoolinordertoremovethemajorityofdirtandgreasebuild-up.Ensureadequatecontainmentis
inplacetopreventenvironmentalcontaminationfromresidualhydraulicfluidanddirtygrease.
2.
Removetheaccesspanelonthesideofthetongdirectlyadjacenttotheshiftermechanism.
3.
Cleantheinteriorofthetongthoroughly,usingeitherwater(donotuseapressurewasher),oranappropriatesolvent-based
grease-cuttingcleanersuchasVarsol.Ensureadequatecontainmentisinplacetopreventenvironmentalcontaminationfrom
residualhydraulicfluid,dirtygrease,andcleaningagents.Makeanoteifanymetalshavingsormetalpiecesareflushedoutof
thegeartraincavity-ifshavingsormetalpiecesareseenthetongmustbeoverhauledbeforeitisreturnedtoservice.

Cleantheexteriorofthetoolthoroughly,usingeitherwater(donotuseapressurewasher),oranappropriatesolvent-based
grease-cuttingcleanersuchasVarsol.Ensureadequatecontainmentisinplacetopreventenvironmentalcontaminationfrom
residualhydraulicfluid,dirtygrease,andcleaningagents.
5.
Inspectallfastenersandfastenersafetywires.Replaceanymissingfasteners-useGrade8boltsonly.Re-torqueallexternal
fastenerstoSAEspecifications.
6.
Inspectbackingpin(s).Ifcracked,broken,orbentit(they)mustbereplaced.
7.
Repairorreplaceanydamagedormissingexternalbodyparts,suchastorquegaugemounts,hydraulicsupports,safetydoor
protectors,etc.
8.
Inspectallpaint-locationsinwhichthepainthasbeendamagedmustberepairedpriortostorage.Prepareareastobepainted
toensuretheyarefreeofgrease,dirt,orsolvent.Touchupusingasolvent-basedacrylicpaint-“McCoyGrey”ispaintnumber
RAL7015.Allowsufficienttimeforpainttodrybeforeproceeding.
9.
Performaliberallubricationoftheequipment-refertoMaintenancesectionofmanualtodeterminelubricationpoints.Gener-
ouslyfillthegeartrainhousingwithgreasethroughtheaccesspanel,andalsothroughtheopeningintherotarygear.
10.
Connecttheequipmenttoahydraulicpowerunit.Ensurealllinesarefullymadeuptopreventequipmentdamagefromexces-
sivebackpressure.Donotneglecttoconnectthemotordrain.
HYDRAULIC PRESSURES AS HIGH AS OPERATING PRESSURE MAY REMAIN TRAPPED IN SMALL
AREAS OF THE EQUIPMENT. ENSURE ALL MAINTENANCE IS CARRIED OUT BY A QUALIFIED
SERVICE TECHNICIAN, AND THAT ADEQUATE PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT IS USED TO
GUARD AGAINST PRESSURE-INDUCED INJURIES
DePressurIzatIon ProCeDure In PreParatIon for storage:
1) Rotatethetongsothattheopeningintherotarygearfacesthegeartrain(towardstherearofthetong).Ensuretongandbackup
doors(ifequipped)areclosed.Fullyextendtheliftcylinder(ifequipped).Ifmountedinaframe,retractthefloatcylinders(ifequipped).
2) De-energizethepowerunit.
3) RepeatedlyactuatethetongmotorcontrolvalveleverINBOTHDIRECTIONStodissipateanyresidualpressureinthevalveand
motor.
4) RemovethehydraulicSUPPLYlinefromtheequipment.
5) RepeatedlyactuatetheremainingcontrolvalveleversINBOTHDIRECTIONStodissipateanyresidualpressureintheremainderof
thehydrauliccontrolsystem.
7) DisconnectthehydraulicRETURNlinefromtheequipment.
8) Disconnectremaininghosessuchascasedrains,orlinesconnectedtotheturnscounter.
IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN THE INTEGRITY OF INSTALLED SEALS, MCCOY RECOMMENDS THAT THE
MAXIMUM STORAGE INTERVAL NOT EXCEED ONE YEAR. AT LEAST ONCE PER YEAR ALL TUBULAR
CONNECTION IN LONG-TERM STORAGE SHOULD BE RECOMMISSIONED AS PER SECTION 3.M. IF
FURTHER STORAGE IS REQUIRED, THE EQUIPMENT SHOULD THEN BE PUT THROUGH ANOTHER
DE-COMMISSIONING PROCEDURE.
