Energizepowerunit.Rotatetongforoneminuteinbothhighandlowgear.Stopthetongandreversethedirectionof
rotationforanotherminuteinbothhighandlowgear,endingwiththeopeningoftherotarygearfacingthegeartrain.
27.
De-energizethepowerunit,andperformathirdgenerouslubricationofthegeartrain,includingthegearhousing.
28.
Rotatetonginlowgearfor5minuteswhilemonitoringpressurizedsealsandhydrauliclines.Ifaseal,line,orfittingbegins
toleakwhiletongisrotating,itmustbereplacedbeforetheequipmentisreturnedtoservice.
29.
Rotatetonginhighgearfor5minuteswhilemonitoringtemperatureoftopandbottombearingcaps.Ifthebearingcaps
arehottothe touch (higherthanapproximately50
o
C)replacetheapplicable bearings. Likewiseifthetongismaking
unusualnoisescheckfordamagedbearings(seeMaintenanceManualforallbearinglocations).
30.
Installloadcell.Ifusingatensionloadcell,performavisualinspectionandreplaceanycracked,broken,ordistorted
componentsincludinglinksandchains.Ifusingacompressionloadcell,replaceanycomponentthathasbeencrushed
orotherwisedistortedthroughcompression.Inspectloadcellfordamageorsignsofstress.Checkoillevelinloadcell
andfillifnecessary(refertotechnicalmanualSection7orSection8).
31.
Ifapplicable,inspecttheloadcellanchorpins(tensionloadcellonly).Replacetheanchorpinsifcrackingormetaldistor-
tionisseen.
32.
Ifapplicable,theweldsecuringthesingleloadcellanchortothebridgebarmainplatemustbeinspected(compression
loadcellonly).Iftheintegrityoftheweldhasbeencompromised,thetongmustberemovedfromserviceuntiltheweld
isrepaired.Theloadcellbeamwillneedtobedisconnectedandremovedsotheweldisvisible.Beforere-installingthe
beam,liberallygreasetheanchorpinbeforereinsertingintotheloadcellbeam.
33.
Whilerotatingthecageplate,ensurethatthejawsproperlycam.Ifthejawsdonotcamproperly,thebrakebandsneed
tobetightened.IncrementallyadjustboththetopandbottombrakebandsEQUALLYuntilpropercamactionisachieved.
Refertothemaintenancesectionofthemanualforinstructionsonproperlyadjustingbrakebands.
34.
Performafullfunctionaltestofthetongincluding,ifapplicable,backupcomponents,liftcylinder,andfloatframecompo-
nents(refertoSection2.I.4).Reportandcorrectanyhydraulicleaksfromthehydraulicvalvebank,orfromanyhydraulic
cylindersthatareused.
35.
Testsafetydoorfeature(ifequipped).Beginrotatingthetongatlowspeed,andopenthetongdoor(s).Ifrotationdoes
notimmediatelystop,thisisanindicationthatthesafetydoormechanismisnotoperatingcorrectlyandthetongmust
beremovedfromserviceuntilthemechanismisrepaired.Repeatthetestwhileoperatingthetongintheoppositedirec-
tion.Ifthesafetydoorisoperatingcorrectly,cageplaterotationwillnotbeinhibitedoncethedoorisclosedandlatched.

Farrrecommendsthatananti-corrosiveagentsuchasTectyl®506beappliedtoallexternalunpaintedsurfaces(and
chainslings)EXCEPTcylinderrods,jawrollers,androtarygearcammingsurfaces.Refertomanufacturerdatasheets
forproperapplicationandsafetyinformation.
Once all of the above maintenance checklist items have been satisfactorily completed the tool may be
returned to service.
