Performavisualinspectionofallliftingpoints-ifvisibledamageisseen,includingcracks,brokenlugs,distortedmetal,etc.
replacedamagedpart(s)beforeplacingtonginservice.Alsoinspectallchains,masterlinks,andturnbuckles-again,ifany
damageisnotedreplacethedamagedpart(s)beforeplacingthetonginservice.RefertoSection2Aofthetechnicalmanual
(Sling/LoadBearingDeviceSafety)forinformationonrecommendedtestingandrecertification.Pleasenotethatturnbuckles
withpartnumber101-3086(shortturnbuckles)useahigh-strengthpinwhichmustbesuppliedbyFarr.
Ifusingastand-alonepowerunit,startitnow-refertothepowerunittechnicalmanualforstartupprocedures.Listentopowerunitfora
momenttoseeifthereareanyunusualmechanicalsounds(rubbing,grinding,excessivepumpnoise).Ifusingadieselunit,allowsufficient
timefortheenginetoreachoperatingtemperaturebeforeincreasingengineRPM.Onceengineiswarm,graduallyincreaseengineRPM
untiloperatingspeedisreached.
23.
Ensurethatsupplypressureisatorabovethetong’sspecifiedoperatingpressure,andthatthereturnpressureislessthan
350psi.
24.
Performavisualinspectionofpressurizedhydrauliclines.Ifanyhydraulicfittingsorhosesareleakingtheymustberepaired
orreplacedbeforeproceeding.
25.
Rotatetongforoneminuteinbothhighandlowgear.Stopthetongandreversethedirectionofrotationforanotherminute
inbothhighandlowgear,endingwiththeopeningoftherotarygearfacingthegeartrain.De-energizethepowerunit,and
performanothergenerouslubricationofthegeartrain,includingthegearhousing.
FAILURE TO ENSURE THAT THE SELF-SEALING SUPPLY AND RETURN LINES ARE FULLY MADE
UP MAY RESULT IN CATASTROPHIC EQUIPMENT FAILURE.
“SHORT” TURNBUCKLES HAVING PART NUMBER 101-3086 EMPLOY HIGH-STRENGTH PINS
WHICH MUST BE SUPPLIED BY FARR.
13.
Removehydraulicmotorandrotatethegeartrainbyhand,anduseaflashlighttoperformavisualinspectionofthegear
trainthroughtheaccesspanelandtheopeningoftherotarygearwhilethegeartrainisbeingrotated.Ifgeardamageor
chipsofmetalareseen,thetongshouldberemovedfromserviceandoverhauledtoavoidfurtherdamage.Replaceaccess
panelwheninspectioniscomplete.
14.
Inspectalljawsanddiesinuseforthemaintenanceinterval.Removepin&roller,andinspectforsignsofdamage-replace
pinsifnecessary.Ifthepinsareweldedinplace&theweldsarefoundtobedamaged,removeandquarantinethejawuntil
theweldisrepaired.Cleanthepinsandrollers,andreassembleusingaliberalcoatingofanti-seizecompound.Ensuredies
aresecureinthejaw&dieretainersarepresent.Replaceworndiesifnecessary.Ensurethatthejawrollersrotatefreely.
15.
Inspectbackingpin(s).Ifcracked,broken,orbentit(they)mustbereplaced.
16.
Inspecttopandbottombrakebandlinings-replaceifliningisfoundtobeflakingorismissingpiecesofmaterial.Unequal
wearofthebrakebandsindicatesthatthebrakebandtensionisnotevenlyadjusted.Refertothemaintenancesectionof
themanualforinstructionsonproperlyadjustingbrakebands.
17.
Inspectdoorsprings.Ensurethespringsretainsufficientstrengthtobeabletoassisttheopeningofthedoor,andtokeep
thedooropen.Thespringsshouldalsohelpto“snap”thedoorshut.
18.
Inspectbackupsprings(ifapplicable).Therearextensionsprings(whereused)shouldbeequallyextended,andthefront
legspringsshouldbeequallycompressed.Ensurethatneitheroftherearbackupspringshavebeenover-extendedand
lacksufficienttensiontoadequatelysupportthebackup.Ensurethatneitherofthefrontlegsprings(or,wheninstalled,the
singlerearbackuplegspring)havebeenover-compressed,andstillretainenoughspringstrengthtosupportthefrontof
thebackup.
19.
Extendallhydrauliccylinders,andinspectcylinderrodsforsignsofmechanicaldamage,flaking,orrust.Farrrecommends
thatdamagedcylindersbereplacedpriortostorage.
20.
Performavisualinspectionofallhydrauliclines.Replaceflexiblelinesiftheyappeartobecracked,fatigued,orhavevisible
signsofwearfromcontactwitharigidobject.Ifyourtongisequippedwithrigidhydrauliclines,replaceanylinethatisdented
orappearstobestressedorcracked.
21.
Generouslyfillthegeartrainhousingwithgreasethroughtheaccesspanel,andalsothroughtheopeningintherotarygear.
Performafulllubrication-refertoMaintenancesectionofmanualtodeterminelubricationpoints.
22.
Ensuremainsupplyandreturnconnectionstothetongarefullymadeup.Re-connecttheremainderofthehydrauliclines.
