M. TUBULAR CONNECTION EQUIPMENT RE-COMMISSIONING PROCEDURE
Performthefollowingrecommissioningprocedureswhenremovingtubularconnectionequipmentfromshortorlong-termstoragebackinto
regularservice.Theseproceduresareessentialforensuringproperequipmentpreparationandoperation.Thefollowingproceduresalso
assumethatthedecommissioningandstorageproceduresrecommendedbyFarrhavebeenstrictlyobserved.

Energizepowerunit.
8.
Ensurethatsupplypressureisatorabovethetong’sspecifiedoperatingpressure,andthatthereturnpressureislessthan
350psi.
9.
Performathoroughinspectionofpressurizedhydrauliclinesandfittings.Anyleakinghydraulicfluidlinesorfittingsmustbe
replacedbeforetheequipmentisreturnedtoservice.
10.
Performathoroughinspectionofallseals.Anysealthatisleakingor“weeping”mustbereplacedbeforetheequipmentis
returnedtoservice.
11.
Rotatetonginlowgearfor5minuteswhilemonitoringpressurizedsealsandhydrauliclines.Ifaseal,line,orfittingbeginsto
leakwhiletongisrotating,itmustbereplacedbeforetheequipmentisreturnedtoservice.Finishthisstepwiththerotarygear
openingfacingthegeartrain.De-energizethepowerunit.
12.
Inspectallflexiblehydrauliclinesforsignsofwear,blistering,oranyothersignsofpotentialfailure-replaceifsignsofpotential
failureareidentified.
13.
Inspectthegeartrainhousing.Iftheamountofgreaseisinadequate,liberallygreasethegeartrainthroughtheaccesspanel,
andthroughtheopeningintherotarygear.
14.
Inspecttopandbottombrakebandlinings-replaceifnecessary.Unequalwearofthebrakebandsindicatesthatthebrake
bandtensionis notevenlyadjusted.Refer tothemaintenancesectionofthemanual forinstructionsonproperly adjusting
brakebands.Ensurethatallgreaseiswipedfrombrakebandliningsandthepartsofthecageplatesthatcomeintocontact
withthebrakebandlinings
15.
Re-installaccesspanel.Installasetofpre-inspectedjawsthatarethecorrectsizeforthepipeorcasingbeingrun.
16.
Installloadcell.Ifusingatensionloadcell,performavisualinspectionandreplaceanycracked,broken,ordistortedcompo-
nentsincludinglinksandchains.Ifusingacompressionloadcell,replaceanycomponentthathasbeencrushedorotherwise
distortedthroughcompression.
17.
Ifapplicable,inspecttheloadcellanchorpins(tensionloadcellonly).Replacetheanchorpinsifcrackingormetaldistortion
isseen.
18.
Ifapplicable,theweldsecuringthesingleloadcellanchortothebridgebarmainplatemustbeinspected(compressionload
cellonly).Iftheintegrityoftheweldhasbeencompromised,thetongmustberemovedfromserviceuntiltheweldisrepaired.
Theloadcellbeamwillneedtobedisconnectedandremovedsotheweldisvisible.Beforere-installingthebeam,liberally
greasetheanchorpinbeforereinsertingintotheloadcellbeam.
19.
Re-energizepowerunit.
FAILURE TO ENSURE THAT THE SELF-SEALING SUPPLY AND RETURN LINES ARE FULLY MADE
UP MAY RESULT IN CATASTROPHIC EQUIPMENT FAILURE.
1.
Removeallprotectiveplasticwrapping.Iftherearedesiccantpackswiththeassembly,theymaybedisposedofwiththe
regulargarbage.
2.
Removetheaccesspanelonthesideofthetongdirectlyadjacenttotheshiftermechanism.
3.
Wipeexcessgreaseorheavyoilfromexposedcylinderrods.
4.
Ifapplicable,re-connectchainslingtoliftinglugs.Performavisualinspectionofallliftingpoints-ifvisibledamageisseen,
includingcracks,brokenlugs,distortedmetal,etc.replacedamagedpart(s)beforeplacingtonginservice.Alsoinspectall
chains,masterlinks,andturnbuckles-again,ifanydamageisnotedreplacethedamagedpart(s)beforeplacingthetongin
service.Ifyourcompanyrequiresyearlycertificationofliftingequipment,ensurethatthemostrecenttestdatefallswithinthe
pastyear.Performrecertificationifnecessary.
5.
Performaliberallubricationoftheequipment-refertoMaintenancesectionofmanualtodeterminelubricationpoints.Gener-
ouslyfillthegeartrainhousingwithgreasethroughtheaccesspanel,andalsothroughtheopeningintherotarygear.
6.
Connecttheequipmenttoahydraulicpowerunit.Ensurealllinesarefullymadeuptopreventequipmentdamagefromexces-
sivebackpressure.Donotneglecttoconnectthemotordrain.
