Appendix B: Recommendations for
Extended Shutdown
NOTE We recommend keeping the argon supply to the instrument on during an extended
shutdown period. This state results in consumption of a small amount of argon passing
through the system.
Expected Power Outages
When a power outage is scheduled for the facility, the CyTOF® XT instrument needs to be
properly shut down. Follow the steps below to shut down prior to the power outage and
restart after power is restored.
NOTE The following procedures may also be used for shutting down and restarting the
instrument for other purposes.
CyTOF XT Shutdown Procedure
1 Confirm that the system is connected to the argon supply so that the vacuum chamber
is filled with argon when vented.
NOTE Plasma must be off before beginning the shutdown procedure.
2 Turn off the RFG power circuit breaker, located on the right side of the instrument.
3 Press the Vacuum (illuminated button), located on the right side of the instrument, to
turn off the vacuum pumps.
4 Wait 15 min for the turbopumps to gradually slow down. At this point, the venting valve
opens, allowing the vacuum chamber to slowly fill with argon at a controlled pressure.
5 Turn off the System power circuit breaker located on the right side of the instrument.
IMPORTANT Leave the argon supply on during shutdown if you plan to restart the
a more rapid achievement of minimum vacuum levels needed before plasma start can
be done.
