Instrument Safety

CAUTION FINGER CUT HAZARD. Broken glass may cause injury to fingers or
hands.
CAUTION FINGER CUT HAZARD. Broken glass may cause injury or cutting of
fingers or hands. To avoid breakage, keep the nebulizer, torch, and heater
assemblies straight while removing and replacing
WARNING Before performing maintenance on the cones, the chiller, and the air
filter, switch off the RFG (radio frequency generator power) using the red circuit
breaker at the right-side panel of the system. Wait at least 5 minutes for residual
electrical charge to dissipate.
WARNING Make sure the RFG switch is turned off before opening the instrument
door to remove cones
WARNING ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT HAZARD. Take special care whenever the
nebulizer assembly is removed while plasma is ignited. The UV light emitted
through the nebulizer port poses an actinic ultraviolet hazard if exposure exceeds
30 min. The nebulizer port safety shutter minimizes exposure and should not be
detached from the heater assembly or blocked at any time from covering the
nebulizer port when the nebulizer is removed.
WARNING The nebulizer may be very hot. Carefully remove the nebulizer from the
beaker using a heat-resistant glove or mitt.
CAUTION HOT SURFACE HAZARD. The torch components, the vacuum interface,
and the heater assembly components remain hot for some time after the plasma
has been shut off. Allow sufficient time, at least 20 min, for these items to cool to
room temperature before you handle them.
WARNING HEALTH HAZARD. Turn down the nebulizer gas to 0.02 L/min to
prevent bleach aerosols from escaping the nebulizer rest and possibly being
inhaled.
WARNING HEALTH HAZARD. Do not mix bleach solution with an acidic solution
(such as Maxpar® Washing Solution) because this mixture produces chlorine gas.

To prevent skin irritation or eye damage, protective gloves, clothing, and eye/face
protection must be worn.
