10.3.1 Stirrer speed
When measuring the surface tension of emulsions and dispersions it may be
necessary to stir the liquid until just before the measurement is made. This is why we
have included a stirrer function; however, this can only be used with the thermostat
jacket.
• The
stirrer speed
can be entered here in revolutions per minute. It should not be
too high as the sample must again be at rest during the measurement.
• In order to set the optimal
stirrer speed
for a particular sample it can also be
regulated when stirring is taking place. Switch on the stirrer when you are on the
third Setup page. You can then set the
stirrer speed
directly with the inner circle of
the rotary controller.
10.3.2 Oscillating period
The stirrer does not move continuously in one direction, but continually changes its
direction. Under
oscillating period
you can enter the time for which the stirrer moves
in one direction before reversal. The pre-set time of 10s is normally adequate; with very
viscous or viscoelastic liquids a larger value should be selected.
If the stirrer is switched off then this parameter is irrelevant.
10.3.3 Temperature sensor
The temperature of the liquid can be measured with two different sensors: with an
internal temperature sensor built into the thermostat jacket or with an external
temperature sensor which is plugged into the socket in the measuring chamber and
allows the temperature to be measured directly in the sample. If no thermostat jacket
but the platform is installed then only the external temperature sensor is available.
Enter the number (0) for internal and the number (11) for external measurement.
