10.2.1 Immersion depth
When a surface or interface has been found the probe is immersed in the liquid or the
heavy phase in order to improve its wettability. The depth to which the probe is to be
immersed is entered here.
In plate measurements measuring errors could occur if sample components
accumulate at the surface and are deposited on the plate; this problem occurs
particularly with dispersions and adhesives. In such cases immersion should be
prevented by setting the immersion depth to 0mm. The maximum immersion depth is
10mm.
In the ring method
Interfacial tension push
the ring is completely surrounded by
the light phase from the start and is therefore not immersed. This is why the immersion
speed is irrelevant in this measuring mode.
The immersion depth is also irrelevant for density determinations as the probe always
requires complete immersion in the liquid.
10.2.2 Sensitivity
This value refers to the sensitivity of the force sensor and indicates which alteration in
the measured mass value is to be regarded as being a registered surface or measured
maximum force (ring measurement). The default setting is 0.003 g.
*
For interfacial tensions and small surface tensions we recommend reducing this
value. Tears in the film during ring measurements can be countered the same way.
*
Vibrations can disturb the force sensor and can cause the instrument to interpret
the change of the measured weight as a detected surface or maximum force. This
can be avoided by increasing the
Sensitivity
value. However, it is better to choose
a more stable location.
