Selecting The Desired Octave Range:
Youadjustthestartingoctavemanually,usingtheOffsetparameteronthecorresponding
controllerssetuppage.IntheOffsetfield,theadditionorsubtractionofthenumberofstepsin
your
currentshiftpatternwillraiseorlowerthestartingoctaveinrelationshiptothedefault
startingoctave.Forexample,inashiftpatternwith3steps,anOffsetvalueof9wouldcausea
controllervalueof0tomakeShiftKeyNumbertriggernotesinoctaveC3C4,
3octavesabove
thedefaultC0C1.Offsetvaluesthatarenotmultiplesofthenumberofcurrentshiftpattern
stepswillchangewhichstepthepatternbeginsonatcontrollervalue0,thusoffsettingthe
relationshipbetweenallofthecontrollersvaluesandcurrentshiftpattern’s steps.
Adjusting Controller Range:
WhenusingShift
KeyNumber,thenumberofstepsintheShiftPatternalsoaffectstherange of
valuesthatwillcauseacontrollertotriggerashiftpatternstep,andinturnaffecttheuseful
rangeofthephysicalcontroller.Withashiftpatternof12notes,the128differentnotesthat
the
PC3LEcantriggerareevenlyspacedovertherangeofthecontroller.Patternswithlessthan12
stepswilltriggernotesineveryoctaveoverashorterrangeofthecontroller.Forexample,ina
shiftpatternwith3steps,bydefaultthecontrollervalues0to2willtrigger
notesstartinginthe
lowestpossibleoctave,andcontrollervalues27to30willtriggernotesinthehighestpossible
fulloctave.Usingaknobforthiscontroller,onlyabout1/4thaturnofthe knobwouldbe
triggeringnotes.Thisdecreasedusefulrangemakesthecontrollerhardertouse
accurately.To
remedythis,youcanadjustacontrollersbehaviorbyusingtheScaleparameteronthe
correspondingcontrollerssetuppage(seeScalebelow.)AdjusttheScalevaluetostretchthe
usefulvaluesofthecontrolleracrossit’swholephysicalrange.Ascalevalueoflessthan100%
willbehelpful
forpatternswithfewerthan12steps.Experimentbyadjustingthescalevalue
untilthehighestdesirednoteistriggeredatthetopofthecontrollersphysicalrange.SeeScale
intheContinuousControllerParameterssectionofthischapterformoredetailsontheScale
parameter.Forshiftpatternswith
morethan12steps,youwillrunoutofcontrollervalues
beforeyourshiftpatterntriggersineveryoctave.Ifyouwanttobeabletoaccessallofthe
availableoctaves,youcanachievethisbysettingmultiplecontrollerstoShiftKeyNumber.
Next,usetheScaleandOffsetparameters
foreachcontroller,adjustingeachtotriggerthe
desiredrangeofoctaves.
