8.9 Regrinding the Cutting Device Knives
Caution, danger of injury!
Danger of injury when working at the magnets of the knife
holders! The function of cardiac pacemakers can be
interrupted by magnetic fields.
Danger of injury by splinters: Never strike against the
installed knives from the bottom with a striking tool - this may
damage the magnets!
During all work on the cutting device knives: Wear protective
gloves.
When carrying out grinding work: wear protective goggles.
Note!
In case of cutting devices with group change (see chapter
"Working with the Desired Knife Group", page 70) the knife
groups can be used one after the other. That means e.g. first
500 bales are produced with the 12-knife group and
subsequently another 500 bales are produced with the 13-
knife group. This duplicates the operation time of the cutting
device.
Sharp knives save driving power, provide for a good cut quality
and optimum crop throughput. Therefore: sharpen the cutting
device knives after cutting of 500 bales at the latest. Dependent
on the working conditions sharpening may be necessary earlier:
Remove cutting device knives:
chapter "Removing the cutting device knives", page 75.
Regrind the cutting device knives from the smooth side only
using a wet grinder. The temper of the blades must not be
drawn when grinding. Economic grinding without heating
(tarnishing) of the blades will prolong the service life of the
cutting device knives.
A grinder is available as a special tool.
