Lenovo ThinkCentre E63z - Updating the BIOS from Your Operating System; Recovering from a BIOS Update Failure

ToupdatetheBIOSfromadisc,dothefollowing:
1.Turnoffyourcomputer.
2.Pressthepowerbuttontoturnonthecomputer.ThenrepeatedlypressandreleasetheF12keyuntilthe
startupdevicemenuwindowopens.
3.Fromthestartupdevicemenuwindow,selectthedesiredopticaldriveasthestartupdevice.Then,
insertthediscintothisopticaldriveandpressEnter.Theupdatebegins.
4.Whenpromptedtochangetheserialnumber,itissuggestedthatyoudonotmakethischangeby
pressingN.However,ifyoudowanttochangetheserialnumber,pressY,thentypeintheserialnumber
andpressEnter.
5.Whenpromptedtochangethemachinetypeandmodel,itissuggestedthatyoudonotmakethis
changebypressingN.However,ifyoudowanttochangethemachinetypeandmodel,pressY,then
typeinthemachinetypeandmodelandpressEnter.
6.Followtheinstructionsonthescreentocompletetheupdate.Aftertheupdateiscompleted,removethe
discfromtheopticaldrive.
UpdatingtheBIOSfromyouroperatingsystem
LenovomakesconstantimprovementstoitsWebsites.TheWebpagecontentsaresubjecttochange
withoutnotice,includingthecontentsreferencedinthefollowingprocedure.ToupdatetheBIOSfrom
youroperatingsystem,dothefollowing:
1.Gotohttp://www.lenovo.com/driversandfollowtheinstructionsontheWebpagetolocatetheBIOS
driverthatyouneed.
2.DownloadtheBIOSdriverandtheTXTfilethatcontainstheinstructions.
3.PrinttheTXTfilethatcontainstheinstallationinstructionsandfollowtheinstructionstoupdateyour
BIOS.
RecoveringfromaBIOSupdatefailure
TorecoverfromaBIOSupdatefailure,dothefollowing:
1.Removeallmediafromthedrivesandturnoffallattacheddevicesandthecomputer.Then,disconnect
allpowercordsfromelectricaloutletsanddisconnectallcablesthatareconnectedtothecomputer.
2.Removethecomputercover.See“Removingthecomputercover”onpage102.
3.LocatetheClearCMOS/Recoveryjumperonthesystemboard.See“Locatingpartsonthesystem
board”onpage32.
4.RemoveanycablesthatimpedeaccesstotheClearCMOS/Recoveryjumper.
5.Movethejumperfromthestandardposition(pin1andpin2)tothemaintenanceposition(pin2and
pin3).
6.ReconnectanycablesthatweredisconnectedandreinstallthePCIcardifremoved.
7.Reinstallthecomputercoverandconnecttheacpoweradapter.See“Completingtheparts
replacement”onpage127.
8.PressthepowerbuttontoturnonthecomputerandinserttheBIOSupdatediscintotheopticaldrive.
Waitafewminutes.Therecoveryprocessbegins.Aftertherecoveryprocessiscompleted,your
computerwillbeturnedoffautomatically.
Note:Dependingonthecomputermodel,therecoveryprocesswilltaketwotothreeminutes.
9.Repeatstep1throughstep4.
10.MovetheClearCMOS/Recoveryjumperbacktothestandardposition(pin1andpin2).
11.ReconnectanycablesthatweredisconnectedandreinstallthePCIcardifremoved.
12.Reinstallthecomputercoverandreconnectanycablesthatweredisconnected.
