Chapter 4 Fault diagnosis

Brewing unit malfunction.
System / component Possible cause Remedy
Mechanical faults
Grinding degree too fine Adjust grinding degree (see “Mainte-
nance, Setting the Grinding Degree”)
Lower piston / outlet piston O-ring defective / worn, or heavily con-
taminated (coffee underneath these O-
rings)
clean and/or replace (see “Maintenance,
dismantle lower piston/ replace O-ring”)
Lower piston External diameter too great; piston jams
in brewing cylinder
replace (see “maintenance, dismantle
lower piston/replace O-ring”)
Lower piston Coffee grounds in lower piston (as a
result of overfilled grounds container)
clean (see “maintenance, dismantle
lower piston/replace O-ring”)
Brewing cylinder Inner surface of brewing cylinder is
scratched; brewing system not water-
tight
replace (see “Maintenance, dismantle
brewing unit”)
Aluminium guides The screws on the guides have come
loose, the guide plates or guiding sur-
faces are scratched or damaged
Replace the entire brewing cylinder
Funnel / stripper Funnel / funnel spring defective
Stripper
replace (see “Brewing unit, dismantle
brewing unit”)
replace stripper (see “Brewing unit,
replace stripper”)
Protection for friction plunger missing replace
Entire brewing unit heavily contaminated clean, replace any defective parts (see
“Maintenance, dismantle brewing unit”)
Brewing unit with friction plunger O-rings on friction plunger defective; too
little or too much friction
Replace the O-rings
Replace the lower piston
Replace the friction plunger for a friction
piston 2000 (conversion kit)
Brewing unit with friction piston

Spring in friction piston broken replace
Piston motor Piston motor fixing loose Install the piston motor correctly (see

Position switch
Micro switch for initial setting defective

Check the function and setting of the
