Glossary
There are always new abbreviations and acronyms coming into everyday use. So here are most of the
ones used in this manual.
AC
Alternating Current.
An electric current that constantly reverses its
direction. The rate of direction change is the
frequency (Hz).
HT
High Tension.
High voltage. In the Starlite Mk 5 this relates to the
connections from the ignitor to the HMI lamp.
AF
Across Faces.
Distance between two opposite faces of a spanner
(or nut) which is directly related to the thread
size. e.g. M5.5 AF spanner fits a nut with 3mm
tread.
ISO
International Standards Organisation.
BCD
Binary Coded Decimal (switch).
A switch that converts a decimal input to a binary
output.
LED
Light Emitting Diode.
CCW
Counter Clock-Wise.
Opposite of Clockwise
LVD
Low Voltage Directive.
A set of European standards relating to the safety of electrical
devices.
CMY
Cyan, Magenta, Yellow.
Subtractive colour mixing system used in the
Starlite Mk5.
OD
Outside Diameter.
The outside diameter of a circular object (as opposed to the
inner diameter (ID)). e.g. a washer.
CTC
Colour Temperature Correction.
The use of colour filters to correct (or change) the
colour temperature of a light source.
PFC
Power Factor Correction.
The use of capacitors (or inductors) for phase shifting in
electronic circuits so that the actual power equals (or is close
to) the apparent power.
CW
Clock-Wise.
Mimicking the movement of the hands on a clock-
face.
PTFE
Poly-Tetra-FluoroEthelyne.
A synthetic lubricant. Trademark “Teflon”
DC
Direct Current.
An electric current which flows only in one
direction.
SMPSU
Switch-Mode-Power-Supply-Unit.
A totally electronic type of PSU (Power Supply Unit)
DIL
Dual In Line.

Time-delay or Time-lag ( fuse types).
A type of fuse which allows for the electrical surge of a circuit
energising without rupturing.
DIP
Dual Inline Package.
A small electronic package with two parallel rows
of connections.
UNC
Unified National, Coarse.
A system of machine threads using the imperial measurement
system.
DMX
Digital multiplex. Also DMX512 (1990)
The data transmission protocol used by the
Starlite Mk 5 (and most other manufacturers )
USITT
United States Institute of Theater Technology.
EMC
Electro-Magnetic Conformity.
A set of European standards relating to the
electronic emissions and immunity of electrical
devices.
UV
Ultra Violet.
Invisible radiation from the blue end of the spectrum.
fps
flashes per second.
Frequency of a strobing light.
WWW
World Wide Web.
The Internet.
HMI
Halogen Metal Iodide.
A type of mixture (of rare earths and gases) used
in the envelope of the arc lamp.
XLR
Generic term used to describe a range of audio/data
connectors. A trademark of ITT Cannon.
