PROCEdURE 26. SET UP & MAINTAIN THE STRING PHANTOM
The string phantom is used for aligning probes and testing proper probe function. The software in the probe
detects the distance between the strings in the phantom.

1. Place the calibration tank on a flat, nonreflective surface.
2. Place the string phantom insert into the calibration tank.
3. Fill the calibration tank with water, ensuring that the string phantom insert is covered by water.
4. Place the probe insert into the recess on the top of the string phantom insert, and then place the
calibration tank lid on the assembled pieces.

5. Leave the tank stationary and unused for 72 hours. This allows sufficient time for the water to degas and
for the strings to become completely saturated.
Note: If the water is not allowed enough time to degas, microscopic air bubbles may distort the test,
causing inaccurate readings.
6. If necessary after the allotted time, clear any air bubbles by slowly and gently lifting the string phantom
insert out of the water at an angle and then replacing it.
