7.25 Checking Generator Capacitors

Carry out this procedure with the engine shut down.
The capacitors of the electrical system are mounted to the top of the
generator underneath the protective cover (a).
7.25.1 With the unit off, remove the screws securing the protective cover and
remove the cover.
7.25.2 Remove the leads from the capacitor and discharge it by placing the
blade of an insulated screwdriver across the two spades of the
capacitor.
7.25.3 Using a multimeter set to the Farad (F) or capacitance (C) scale (200
µF), measure the capacitor’s capacitance. On systems with dual
capacitors, each capacitor should measure 18±2 µF. If the reading is
not within this range, replace the capacitor. Also see Alternative
