5.3.2 Precautions when Using GPIB
1. Do not use too long a connection cable or bus cable to connect any instrument or controller. Ensure
that the total cable length does not exceed 20 m. ADC CORPORATION offers the following standard
bus cables.
2. Bus cables have piggyback connectors. A piggyback connector has both a male connector and a
female connector by itself. The male and female connectors can be stacked on top of each other.
When connecting the bus cables, do not stack three or more connectors. Secure the connectors with
the clamping screws.
3. Check the power requirements, grounding conditions, and setting conditions of each device before
turning on its power.
Ensure that all devices on the bus are turned on. If any device on the bus is not turned on, the system
may not operate correctly.
4. Connecting and disconnecting cables
Turn off all devices on the bus before connecting or disconnecting GPIB cables. Check that the chas-
sis of the devices on the bus are connected to each other and to the ground before connecting or dis-
connecting any GPIB cables.
5. ATN interrupt during message transmission
If an ATN request interruption occurs during transfer of messages between devices, the ATN has pri-
ority and the previous status is cleared.
6. Up to 255 characters can be recognized in a single program command transmission.
An error occurs if the program command exceeds 255 characters.
7. Retain the REN line at Low for 5 ms or longer following the transmission of program command.
8. When using the Listen Only mode, do not connect the controller.
9. The next command can be received before the execution of the *TRG or E command is complete.
To delay the execution of the next command until the current command is complete, use the *OPC,
*OPC?, or *WAI command. Describe these commands at the end of a line in the program.
Example: "*TRG, *OPC," "*TRG, *OPC?," "*TRG, *WAI"
