36 Operation Manual
2 Installing GC Columns
To Install a Capillary Column in the GC/MS Interface
Procedure
1 Condition the column. (See “To Condition a Capillary
Column” on page 33.)
2 If you are not using Quick Swap, vent the MS. To vent the MS,
see “To Vent the MS” on page 69.
3 Slide an interface nut and conditioned ferrule onto the free
end of the GC column. The tapered end of the ferrule must
point towards the nut.
4 Insert the column into the column measuring tool and allow
the end of the column to project 10–15 mm past the end of
the tool.
5 Use the column cutter to score the column 2 cm from its end.
6 While holding the column against the column cutter with
your thumb, break the column against the edge of the column
cutter.
7 Inspect the end for jagged edges or burrs. If the break is not
clean and even, repeat steps 4 and 5.
8 Wipe the end with alcohol.
