Optimizing Measurement Results
Reducing Noise
To Use Direct Sampler Access Configurations (Option 014 Only)
Direct sampler access to both the A and B samplers can decrease the noise floor of the analyzer. Analyzers
with Option 014 have the ability to externally reverse the test port couplers by repositioning the A or B
sampler and the PORT 1 or PORT 2 SWITCH and COUPLER jumpers. This configuration enables the analyzer
to increase the dynamic range in the forward direction by approximately 16 dB. When making reverse
measurements in the forward dynamic range configuration, PORT 2 output power is reduced approximately
16
dB. Similarly, the dynamic range in the reverse direction can be increased by approximately 16 dB by
repositioning the A sampler ports and the PORT 1 SWITCH and COUPLER port jumpers. Refer to
Figure 5-1 to
see the front-panel configuration for the increased forward dynamic range mode.
Figure 5-1 Increased Forward Dynamic Range Configuration
Increased Power Dynamic Range
Maximum power you should input to the test port in this configuration is 5 dBm without compression.
For best results when measuring high and low loss devices, like filters, the sweep type “LIST FREQ
SWEPT” mode should be used. Using this sweep type allows you to maximize power to the device under
test. By editing the frequency list, the power level in the pass band region can be reduced, while the
lower level in the rejection band region can be increased. When calibrating the instrument, make sure
the
is off. This can be accomplished by changing the list type to stepped, which
automatically turns off the list power. The source power should be set to a level that will not cause
compression during the “thru” standard and to the maximum list power during an isolation calibration
step. After the calibration is completed and the device under test has been connected to the instrument,
turn the
on or select . For more information regarding the
mode, refer to "Swept List Frequency Sweep (Hz)" on page 7-18.
