DisplayPort
Digital display interface developed by the Video Electronics S tandards Association (VESA). T his royalty-free interface
is primarily used to c onnect a video source to a display device such as a computer monitor, though it can also be used
to transmit audio, USB , and other forms of data. VES A designed it to replace VGA, DVI, and FPD-Link. Backwa rd
compatibility to VGA and DVI by using active adapter dong les e nables users to use DisplayPort tted video sources
without replacing ex isting display devices.
HDCP
High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection is a form of digital copy protection dev eloped by Intel Corporation to p revent
copying of digital audio and v ideo content as it travels across DisplayPort, Digital Visual Interface (DV I), High-Denition
Multimedia Interface (HDMI), Gigabit Video Interface (GVIF), or Unied Display Interface (UDI) connec tions, even if
such copying would be permitted by fair use laws. The specication is proprietary, and implementing HDCP requires
a license.
3G-SDI
Serial Digital Interface (SDI) is a s erial link standardized by I TU-R BT.656 and the Society of Motion Picture and Tele-
vision Engineer s (SM PT E) . SDI transmits un compresse d digital video over 75-o hm coaxial cable within studios, and
is seen on most professional video infrastructure equipment. T he rst revision of t he standard, S MP TE 25 9M, was
dened to carry digital representation of analog v ideo such as NTSC and PA L over a serial interface and is more pop-
ularly known as standard-denition (SD) SDI. The data rate required to transmit SD SDI is 270 Mbps . W ith the advent
of high-denition (HD) v ideo standards such as 1080i and 720p, the interface was scaled to handle higher data rates
of 1.485 G bps . The 1.485-Gbps serial interface is com monly called the HD SDI interface and is dened by SMPTE
292M, using the same 75-ohm c oaxial c able. S tudios and other video production facilities have invested heavily on
the hardware infrastructure for coaxial cable and have a ves ted interest in extending the life of their infrastructure. For-
tunately, SMPT E recently ratied a n ew standard called S MPT E 424M that doubles the SDI data rates to 2.97 Gbps
using the same 75-ohm coaxial c able. T his new s tandard, also called 3-Gbps (3G)-SDI, enables higher resolution of
picture quality required for 1080p and digital cinema.
HDMI
HDMI (High-Denition Multimedia Interface) is a compac t audio/video interface for transferring uncom pressed v ideo
data and compressed/uncompressed digital audio data from a HDMI-com pliant device ("the sou rce device") to a com-
patible computer monitor, video projector, digital television, or digital audio device. HDM I is a digital replacement for
existing analog video standards.
