11. Insert the quartz chimney into the opening of the top of the cavity, through
the top of the furnace, and through the hole in the quartz plate. The furnace
and/or plate may require alignment for proper positioning of the chimney.
(fi gures 3 and 4)
12. Install the furnace door.
13. Determine on which side of the instrument to place the scrubber and vacuum
pump. Install the frame rod on the selected side in the white mounting bracket.
Tighten the thumbscrew. (fi gure 4)
14. Attach the fl ask utility clamp to the frame rod installed in step 13. Orient the
clamp so that the two fi ngers are positioned horizontally to the one fi nger.
Tighten the thumbscrews. (fi gure 4)
15. Connect the tubing assembly (6” section of Tefl on tubing with a fi tting on
one end and a hose clamp on the other end) to the fl ask. Loosen the hose
clamp on the tubing assembly and slide the tubing over the barb fi tting on the
Erlenmeyer fl ask. Tighten the clamp so that the tubing does not rotate. Use
caution to prevent over-tightening the tubing.
16. Position the Erlenmeyer fl ask (with installed tubing assembly) in the fi ngers
of the clamp so that the ground glass joint is between the two fi ngers on one
side of the clamp and the one fi nger on the other side of the clamp. Tighten
the thumbscrew so that the fi ngers grasp the fl ask on both sides. (fi gures 3
and 4)
17. Install the quartz chimney extension into the top of the chimney. Install the
quartz elbow into the extension and into the top of the fl ask. Alignment of
the parts may require loosening the thumbscrews of the fl ask clamp. Tighten
the thumbscrews. Ensure that all ground glass joints are seated and sealed.
(fi gures 3 and 4)
18. Install the metal exhaust guard over the chimney extension and secure it with
one thumbscrew. (fi gures 3 and 4)
19. Perform the installation procedures outlined on page 15, steps 19 through 22.
