Manual DEHLER 39
66 - 72
10. >Ten golden rules for water sports fans
1. Please avoid sailing into canebrakes, reed beds and all other densely covered
shore areas. Try also to avoid pebble, sand and sludge banks (resting and living
areas for birds) as well as shore bushes. Also avoid shallow waters (spawn areas),
certainly those with aquatic plants.
2. Please keep sufficient distance between the boat and canebrakes, reed beds
and other densely covered shore areas as well as shore bushes – on wide rivers
for example 30 to 50 meters.
3. Please comply with all valid instructions in nature reserves. Water sports are
frequently forbidden in nature reserves, all-year or part of the year, or at least
only possible under certain conditions.
4. Please be careful with water sports in „internationally protected wetland areas“.
These areas are the living space of rare animals and plants and therefore their
protection is useful.
5. When mooring, always use the foreseen spaces or at least a place where you
cannot damage anything.
6. Even on land, don´t go too near to reed beds and other densely covered areas,
so as not to disturb and endanger the living space of birds, fishes, small animals
and plants .
7. Obser ve and take photographs of animals from as far as possible.
8. If you are in a mud-flats area, don´t go near to seal banks, so as not to disturb or
drive away the animals. Keep a distance of at least 300 to 500 m between the
boat and seal and bird areas and try to keep as near as possible to marked
waterways. Try to sail as slow as possible.
9. Help to keep the water clean. Rubbish does not belong into the water, certainly
not the contents of chemical toilets. This rubbish has to be evacuated , just as
used oil, at special evacuation points in harbours. When in a harbour, use only
the on-land toilets. When mooring in a harbour, don´t let the engine run,
affecting the environment with noise and exhaust fumes.
10. Make these rules your own and before going on a sailing trip try to inform yourself
about the regulations in the area you want to go to. Try to transmit this
knowledge and your own exemplary behaviour to younger people and non-
organized water sports fans.
