11. Maintenance, repairs and cleaning
11.1 Hull, deck
Winter storage is the right time to thoroughly inspect the hull and other bearing construction
elements. If the gel coat is damaged and the laminate has become visible, this fine layer
should be repaired, starting with the sanding of the bottom layer, the application of a new gel
coat and its sealing through sanding and polishing. You can get the right repair packages and
useful information from your seller.
For the cleaning and maintenance of all components of the technical equipment of the boat
you will find useful hints in the different chapters of this manual or in the special
manufacturer’s installation and maintenance instructions, which belong to the boat’s
documentation.
11.2 Cleaning
Clean the parts of the boat under the waterline as soon as the boat is taken out of the water.
High pressure cleaning machines remove every kind of vegetation. The nextr task is the
repair and cleaning of the gel and varnish coat. All paint manufacturers give extensive
information with their treatment and painting systems.
For boats sailing in salt water areas: Salt rests bind the water and accelerate corrosion. Where
possible, wash the boat with freshwater
11.3 Ventilation
It doesn’t matter if your boat is stored under roof or in the open air during winter. A correct
ventilation avoids corrosion, mold stains and fungi. With clear weather, the low air humidity
in winter quickly dries your boat.
11.4 Rigging
During winter storage, the rigging should also be thoroughly checked. Especially the
standing and running rigging but also the hatch pane casings and the mast and boom profiles
should be checked. When the rigging is laid down, you can repair all small damages.with vry
few effort.
11.5 Electricity
Swittches should show no corrosion and be well-fixed. Once a year you should check all
connection points..
The battery needs some special care. Even the fact that it is „maintenance-free“ does not
mean that with frost you can leave the battery connected on the boat. Only a charged battery,
stored in a frost-free space and from time to time recharged, will work for years.
11.6 Hose braces
All hoses and pipes under the construction waterline are fixed with double hose braces.
Every year you should check the fixing of the braces.
