Dismantling
It is possible to dismantle the ram without removing it from
the machine. However the steering joints at each end of
the rack must be released (see Removal, step 2).
If the ram has been removed from the machine, support
the assembly horizontally in a vice taking care not to
damage the ram cylinder.
Remove and discard circlip 1 and knock gland bearing 2
inwards to give access to lock ring 3. Prise out lock ring 3
by tapping the open ends inward. The ring will tilt in the
bore and can then be withdrawn.
Using a soft faced hammer, knock the opposite end of the
ram rod 4 to extract the rod and piston assembly together
with the gland bearing. Remove the gland bearing from the
rod.
Repeat the above procedure to remove the opposite gland
bearing but use a suitable drift through the bore of the
cylinder to tap out the bearing.
Remove and discard all seals and wear rings.
Ensure that all metal components are free from scoring,
nicks and burrs. A damaged rod will impair the life of the
gland and wiper seals.
Assembling
Renew all seals and wear rings.
Fit a new seal 5 and wear rings 6 to the piston and lubricate
with hydraulic oil. Install the rod assembly into the cylinder.
Fit a new gland seal 7 and wiper seal 8 into one gland
bearing 2 ensuring that they are not twisted. Fit a new seal
9 to the outside groove.
Lubricate the seals with hydraulic oil then assemble the
bearing over the piston rod and into the cylinder. Knock the
bearing into the bore sufficiently to enable fitment of the
lock ring 3.
Fit a new lock ring 3, making sure that it locates in its
groove, then by knocking the opposite end of the rod
assembly, move the bearing outwards until it contacts the
lock ring. Fit a new circlip 1 to secure the bearing.
Repeat procedure for opposite bearing.
