Ifyourtemperaturegaugeindicates
overheating,youwillexperiencea
lossofpower,orhearloudpingingor
knocking,theengineisprobablytoo
hot.Ifthishappens,youshould:
1.Pullofftheroadandstopassoon
asitissafetodoso.
2.PlacetheshiftleverinP
(automatictransmission)or
neutral(manualtransmission)and
settheparkingbrake.Iftheair
conditioningison,turnitoff.
3.Ifenginecoolantisrunningout
underthevehicleorsteamis
comingoutfromthehood,stop
theengine.Donotopenthehood
untilthecoolanthasstopped
runningorthesteaminghas
stopped.Ifthereisnovisible
lossofenginecoolantandno
steam,leavetheenginerunning
andchecktobesuretheengine
coolingfanisoperating.Ifthefan
isnotrunning,turntheengineoff.
4.Checktoseeifthewaterpump
drivebeltismissing.Ifitisnot
missing,checktoseethatitis
tight.Ifthedrivebeltseemsto
besatisfactory,checkforcoolant
leakingfromtheradiator,hoses
orunderthevehicle.(Iftheair
conditioninghadbeeninuse,it
isnormalforcoldwatertobe
drainingfromitwhenyoustop).
