Thisspeedofinflationreducesthe
riskofseriousorlife-threatening
injuriesinaseverecollisionandis
thusanecessarypartoftheair
bagdesign.
However,airbaginflationcan
alsocauseinjurieswhichcan
includefacialabrasions,bruises
andbrokenbonesbecausethe
inflationspeedalsocausestheair
bagstoexpandwithagreatdeal
offorce.
• There are even circumstances
under which contact with the
steering wheel air bag can cause
fatal injuries, especially if the
occupant is positioned excessively
close to the steering wheel.
WARNING
• Toavoidseverepersonalinjury
ordeathcausedbydeploying
airbagsinacollision,thedriver
shouldsitasfarbackfromthe
steeringwheelairbagaspossible
(atleast250mm(10inches)
away).Thefrontpassengers
shouldalwaysmovetheirseatsas
farbackaspossibleandsitbackin
theirseat.
• Airbagsinflateinstantlyin
theeventofacollision,and
passengersmaybeinjuredbythe
airbagexpansionforceiftheyare
notinaproperposition.
• Airbaginflationmaycauseinjuries
includingfacialorbodilyabrasions,
injuriesfrombrokenglassesor
burns.
Noise and smoke
Whentheairbagsinflate,they
makealoudnoiseandtheyleave
smokeandpowderintheairinside
ofthevehicle.Thisisnormalandis
aresultoftheignitionoftheairbag
inflator.Aftertheairbaginflates,
youmayfeelsubstantialdiscomfort
inbreathingduetothecontactof
yourchestwithboththeseatbelt
andtheairbag,aswellasfrom
breathingthesmokeandpowder.
Open your doors and/or windows
as soon as possible after impact
in order to reduce discomfort and
prevent prolonged exposure to the
smoke and powder.
Thoughthesmokeandpowderare
non-toxic,theymaycauseirritation
totheskin(eyes,noseandthroat,
etc).Ifthisisthecase,washand
rinsewithcoldwaterimmediately
andconsultadoctorifthesymptom
persists.
