Usethisinformationtoinstallanadditionalmicroprocessorandheatsink.
Thefollowingnotesdescribethetypeofmicroprocessorthattheserversupportsandotherinformationthat
youmustconsiderwhenyouinstallamicroprocessor:
•TheserversupportsIntelscalablemulti-coremicroprocessorswhicharedesignedfortheLGA2011
socket.Scalableuptotencoreswithanintegratedmemorycontroller,quick-pathinterconnectandshared

•BothmicroprocessorsmusthavethesameQuickPathInterconnect(QPI)linkspeed,integratedmemory
controllerfrequency,corefrequency,powersegment,cachesize,andtype.
•Readthedocumentationthatcomeswiththemicroprocessortodeterminewhetheryoumustupdatethe
serverfirmwarefortheserver.Todownloadthemostcurrentlevelofserverfirmwareandmanyother
codeupdatesforyourserver,completethefollowingsteps:

•Toorderadditionalmicroprocessoroptionaldevices,contactyoursalesrepresentativeorreseller.
•Themicroprocessorspeedsareautomaticallysetforthisserver;therefore,youdonothavetosetany
microprocessorfrequency-selectionjumpersorswitches.
•Ifyouhavetoreplaceamicroprocessor,callforservice.
•Ifthethermal-greaseprotectivecover(forexample,aplasticcaportapeliner)isremovedfromtheheat
sink,donottouchthethermalgreaseonthebottomoftheheatsinkorsetdowntheheatsink.
•Donotremovethefirstmicroprocessorfromthesystemboardtoinstallthesecondmicroprocessor.
Attention:
•Astartup(boot)microprocessormustalwaysbeinstalledinmicroprocessorsocket1onthesystemboard.
•Toensurecorrectserveroperationwhenyouinstallanadditionalmicroprocessor,usemicroprocessors
thatarecompatibleandinstallatleastoneDIMMinaDIMMconnectorformicroprocessor2.
Therearetwotypesofmicroprocessorinstallationtools.Thetoolsaresimilarinfunctionanddesign,
howeverToolAhasonesettingforinstallingonesizeofmicroprocessor,andsupportsthefollowingfamilies
ofmicroprocessors:E5-26xx,E5-46xx.InstallationToolBhastwosettingsforinstallingtwodifferentsizes
ofmicroprocessors.ThesettingsthataremarkedonToolBare“L”forsmallerlowcoremicroprocessors,
and“H”forlargerhighcoremicroprocessors.InstallationToolBsupportsthefollowingfamiliesof
