Lubricating oil system
The progressively declining quality of heavy fuel oils and the contamination contained therein can
lead to engine troubles with increasing frequency if the lube oil is not cared for in an adequate
manner.
For this reason, the following instructions point out the importance of a careful lube oil treatment
and supervision of the lube oil circuit so as to ensure a trouble-free and economical engine
operation.
Lubricating oil
The selection of the suitable lube oil and the limit values are observed according to the operating
media A4.05.08.nn.
The lube oil has important functions in engine operation as e.g.:
• Replace metallic friction with the much lower fluid friction of the oil film.
• Protect engine parts from corrosive combustion gases.
Note:
Sulphurous residues and combustion products of the fuel form sulphuric acid
with the water vapor which results from combustion and which afterwards
condenses. This produces corrosive wear on bearings, pistons, valves and
cylinder liners.
• Dissipate frictional heat.
• Act as a coolant (pistons).
• Improve the seal between piston, piston rings and cylinder liner, to limit gas blow-by.
• Suspend abraded particles, combustion residues and products of deterioration.
