3.14 Error Correction and Data Compression
During transmission, errors may occur due to noise interference in the telephone line or due to
distortion of the signals. To ensure high data safety, the data are incorporated in an error
protocol, i.e. information is added to the actual data enabling the receiver modem to detect
errors and to correct them, if necessary.
According to the V.42 standard, the correction methods LAPM and MNP 2-4 are applied. If the
V.42 mode has been enabled, the modem transmits a definite character string to detect which
configuration is enabled by the remote station and then selects LAPM or MNP according to the
requirements.
By means of the FP Modem-EU, you can also enforce a connection under MNP or LAPM, under
the condition that one of the two correction modes is supported.
In order to transmit still more data per time unit, the data flow can be compressed even more.
V.42bis and MNP 5 are the relevant methods. Depending on the type of the data to be
transmitted, the rate can be more than tripled.
The FP Modem-EU configures itself while the connection is being established, depending on
the preset transmission mode. Then it adjusts the methods possible with the remote station.
