STARTER ONE-WAY CLUTCH INSPECTION
1. Remove flywheel as outlined in this chapter.
2. Place flywheel on work bench. Grasp gear and rotate
clockwise

. It should turn smoothly without binding.
3. Rotate gear counterclockwise. The gear should
immediately lock in position and not slip.
4. Inspect inside of hub

for wear, galling, or uneven
surface.
5. Inspect crankshaft bearing surface
e
for abnormal
wear.
6. Remove starter gear from the flywheel assembly.
7. Remove the one-way clutch retaining bolts

.
8. Remove clutch and inspect both sides of drive rollers
t
and roller contact surface
y
inside hub for wear,
damage, or uneven surface.
9. Inspect drive surface of starter gear
u
for wear,
damage, or uneven surface. If any starter clutch
component is worn or damaged, replace clutch,
clutch hub, and starter gear.
