2 Pairing with Smart Cradle
This chapter introduces the Smart Cradles, an invaluable accessory for wireless communication. It can be paired
with your scanner and send the latter’s readings to a host device that lacks Bluetooth capabilities. Instructions on
how to pair with or unpair from the Smart Cradle are also presented herein.
2.1 Introduction
Smart Cradles can be paired with your Bluetooth Mobile handheld scanner to send the latter’s readings to a host
device that is not Bluetooth-enabled. This accessory offers a simple plug-and-play, wireless solution. It is
compatible with a wide range of host devices, such as desktop PCs, POS & ECR machines, industrial devices, and
PLCs.
Once the Smart Cardle is plugged into your host device and powered on, it can be wirelessly “paired” with a
cordless scanner so that they may communicate via Bluetooth. Pairing is done through PAIR mode (single scanner
connection) or PICO mode (multiple scanner connections).
Should radio link with the Smart Cradle be lost after pairing (e.g. scanner goes outside of Bluetooth coverage
zone), the scanner will automatically attempt to reconnect once it detects the Smart Cradle’s signals. To change or
remove a pairing method that was implemented, scan the Uninstall barcode with the paired scanner.
PAIR Mode
PAIR mode is a straightforward pairing method, whereby only a single scanner can be paired with the Smart
Cradle. Once paired, they become “locked” to each other. No additional pairings can be formed by the scanner or
Smart Cradle unless their current pairing is first released or overridden. The Unlocked Pair Mode can be used for
open pairings.
PICO Mode
Under PICO mode, multiple scanners (up to 7) can be paired with a Smart Cradle simultaneously. An easy way to
release all pairings (at once) of the Smart Cradle is to press and hold the latter’s paging/reset button for at least 5
seconds. To unpair specific scanners only, scan the Uninstall barcode with each of those scanners.
Default Factory Pairing
If a scanner and its Smart Cradle were received together as part of the same kit, they should already be paired
with each other by default under PAIR mode. If you would like to change this pairing or use the PICO mode instead,
please refer to the instructions below. When paired (and powered on), the scanner’s link indicator will flash blue
every 2.5 seconds, and the Smart Cradle’s center indicator will be a steady blue. However, if either the scanner or
its Smart Cradle is flashing red and green lights, it means that the device in question is in an unpaired state. In
which case, follow the instructions in this chapter to pair them.
