4 Using the Scanner
This chapter describes the three basic operation modes for Bluetooth Mobile handheld scanners: Online Scanning,
Batch Scanning, and Validation Scanning. These modes are expressly designed to assist with routine business tasks,
e.g. inventory count and item verification. Topics such as hands-free scanning, power management, on-screen
keyboard input and default settings are also discussed herein.
4.1 Basic Operation Modes
Bluetooth Mobile handheld scanners are engineered for a wide range of uses. To help users save time and effort
when performing their tasks, scanning devices can be set to a number of pre-defined operation modes. This
chapter introduces three very important modes:
Online Scanning
Batch Scanning
Validation Scanning
These modes were expressly created to facilitate routine business tasks in the retail and industrial sectors, such
as inventory count, item verification, etc. Each contains particular functionalities designed to simplify, accelerate
and optimize scanning assignments. Users can select the mode that best suits their requirements.
The present chapter provides an outline of the features associated with these three operation modes, as well as
their basic command barcodes.
4.1.1 Online Scanning
Under the Online Scanning mode, the captured barcode is decoded and transmitted to the host device
immediately. This mode is ideal for real-time scanning applications. Its features are as follows:
ACK/NAK Protocol
If the ACK/NAK Software Handshaking option is selected, your scanner will wait for an ACK (acknowledgement) or
NAK (negative acknowledgement) from the host device after each data transmission. If NAK is received, your
scanner will re-transmit the same data until the host device sends back an ACK. Please see the Barcode
Programming Manual for details.
The ACK/NAK software handshaking option is available under:
Pair mode, using RS-232 or USB COM interface.
SPP master or slave mode.
Auto Reconnecting
If your scanner loses connection with its paired Bluetooth device (host device or Smart Cradle), it will beep 4 times
in descending tone as warning. Its link indicator will flash blue 3 times every 2 seconds.
When your scanner detects the Bluetooth device’s signals again, it will automatically attempt to reconnect. The
scanner will emit 4 beeps in ascending tone upon reconnection, and its link indicator will flash blue once every
2.5 seconds. All of your scanner’s stored data will be automatically transmitted to the Bluetooth device.
This auto-reconnecting function is available under:
PAIR mode and PICO mode, using RS-232 or USB COM interface
Bluetooth HID mode
SPP slave mode
