APPENDIX A
BATTERY TESTING INFORMATION
GENERAL INFORMATION
All sealed lead-acid batteries in fire alarm service should be tested annually.
l
Replace all sealed lead-acid batteries that have been in service for four or more years.
If possible, use a battery tester made specifically for checking sealed lead-acid batteries, such as a Cavco
Powercheck Model 30.
l
When using such a battery tester, test the batteries in accordance with the instructions that accompany the tester.
If a battery tester is unavailable, the Voltage Response Test described below can be used to detect batteries with
very low capacity of shorted cells.
IMPORTANT:
A defective battery charger circuit can cause battery failure. Check the condition of thebattery
charger when either a battery tester or a voltage response test reveals weakened batteries.
TEST PARAMETERS
Ambient temperature = approximately 68 Fahrenheit (20 Celsius).
Do not discharge a 12-Volt battery below 10.8 volts.
Test each battery of a supply.
l
This prevents a charging imbalance when batteries are reconnected to the system.
~
VOLTAGE RESPONSE TEST
1. Disconnect system battery leads and, using a digital voltmeter, measure no-load voltage.
l
Acceptable voltages:
- Approximately 12.5V for a 12V battery
- Approximately 25V for series-connected batteries.
2. Determine desired test from Table 1. Then, set up circuitry accordingly.
3. Read the voltage across the load at the end of the required time duration.
4. Treat the battery as described in Table 2.
*
l l
CAUTION * * *
Resistors will get hot during test!
Use 12AWG wire for battery-to-resistor hookup.
