6.9 Manually calculating vessel position
When no GPS is available, the Lines Of Position function (LOP)
and a magnetic compass may be used to calculate your position.
Two LOPs will give you an estimated vessel position. To obtain
a high degree of accuracy (position fix) three LOPs must be
used.
NOTE:
An accurate position can only be estimated if the vessel
maintains a steady course!
In the following example one lighthouse (1) and one mast (2) are
used as known objects to position 2 LOPs.
1 Point your magnetic compass to the lighthouse and to the
mast and note the readings
2 Activate the Lines Of Position dialog
3 Press the Set Position key for Line 1
4 Move the cursor to the lighthouse symbol and
press the left cursor button to position the first
end point of the LOP
5 Drag the cursor away from the lighthouse
symbol to create the line. Ensure that the
direction for the line is the same as read when
pointing the compass to the lighthouse
